“Good. Add me to the list.”
I stared at her.
She inhaled slowly. “This situation got you here.”
I flinched. “I know.”
“No. Listen.”
Her voice stayed gentle. “You knowingly walked into somebody else’s covenant.”
My eyes filled. “Klair—”
“You knew he made vows.”
“I know.”
“You knew he stood before God and promised someone else something.”
“I know.”
“And you kept telling yourself that because he said the marriage was over, that made those vows less real.”
Tears slid down my face. “I know.”
“You were willing to stand in the middle of a covenant you didn’t belong in and somehow convinced yourself you could do that without getting cut by the broken glass.”
That hurt.
“Baby, that doesn’t mean you deserve this.”
My mouth trembled.
“It doesn’t mean God is punishing you.”
I looked at her.
“It doesn’t mean you are ruined.”
She squeezed my hands. “But it does mean you have to stop acting shocked when chaos behaves like chaos.”
My eyes closed.
“Caleb has been showing you disorder from the beginning.”
I sobbed.
“He just wraps it in flowers, apologies and future plans.”
She rubbed my back. “And you love him.”
I nodded.
“But love is not supposed to require you to lose yourself.”
Klair pulled me against her again. I cried into her shoulder.
Eventually she whispered, “You are going to survive this.”
