Thank fuck.
“You know, I have loved and hated planning the wedding so quickly,” Pete says out of the blue as we sit on the couch in the safe house.
We’re all geared up and ready to go.
Chapter Twenty-Six
Ever
“Yeah, I get that,” I reply. “It’s been really full-on.”
“Yeah, this is actually a really nice break,” he chuckles.
“It’s crazy to think that the day after tomorrow you’re going to be a married man,” Jensen grins.
Pete’s smile is huge, but it dims as he says, “Yeah, and then he’s gone.”
“Oh, Pete,” Zemi says, with a frown. “I’m so sorry.”
“Thanks,” he says, smiling sadly. “There’s not much that I can do about it.”
“Doesn’t mean that it doesn’t suck, man,” Saint points out.
Their team is the only other team at this safe house with us, because quite frankly, we didn’t trust any of the others enough to be here.
Well, the guys didn’t trust them near me because of the potential threat of Hunt wanting to know who Shadow is.
I’m more than okay with it.
Not because I’m worried about the other teams being a threat, but because I don’t like them, and there are a lot of personal and emotional things involved in this case, and they don’t need to be here with us for that. Keeping them at a professional distance at all times is the smartest thing that we can do in this situation.
Trick looks up from his phone. “Alaric’s pulling in with Liam.”
“Are we sure it’s a good idea for Liam to know about this place?” Wilder asks with a raised eyebrow.
I shake my head. “Probably not, but Mr. R most likely wanted to get rid of this place anyway. It’s been used a few times now, and you know he doesn’t like to use them for too long.”
“Good point,” he replies.
The front door opens, and we all turn to look as Alaric and Liam walk in.
I’ve made sure that I’m sitting next to Atlas.
This isn’t going to be easy for him, and I want to make sure that I’m there for him if he needs me.
Liam’s eyes search the room, cataloging the people and the exits before his gaze lands on Atlas and me, and a broad, warm smile lights his expression.
“Atlas, Ever,” he greets warmly.
“Hey Liam,” I reply, because it feels rude not to.
Alaric clears his throat when Atlas simply nods once at his father and watches him closely. To be honest, I think Liam’s lucky that he got that much from Atlas.
“Right, let’s go over the plan, and then we can head out and get into position,” Alaric says. “Mr. R is coordinating with the other teams and making sure they know what’s going on and where they need to be.”
“Great,” Trick says.
“Right, so I’ll go in, and I’ll keep him talking for as long as I can and make sure that you all have as much information as you need,” Liam says with certainty. When we all look at him with his eyebrows raised, he adds, “That’s what you need, isn’t it? I know the plan is to take him out, but having as much information to prove that he is the ultimate risk means that it's easier for you with the organization and things, yes?”
