The Innocent

“She?” Ace asked, eyeing him.

There were very few women who knew his birth name and even less who dared to call him by it. Aside from legal purposes, he’d buried his name years ago.

“Yeah, I forgot to get her name. But she left a number.”

Jekyll held up his hand, and the prospect handed him the slip of paper. He looked down at the number but didn’t recognize it. It wasn’t local.

“She say anything else?” Ace asked.

The prospect snorted. “Yeah, something about calling anytime and her sleep schedule.”

What the fuck?

Jekyll stood and walked out to the front porch. It could’ve been a cold call, but he’d call back. He never took chances with anything that came off as suspicious. He dialed the number and brought the phone to his ear. On the third ring, he heard the soft female voice.

“H-hello?”

Every muscle in his body tightened, and his breath grew heavy. I know this voice. The tone was off, not nearly as chipper as it had been in the past. But he knew it.

“Hello?” she repeated.

Jekyll balled his fist, clenching his teeth. He lowered the phone and tapped the end button, hanging up. Why the hell was she calling him? How had she even gotten the phone number for the clubhouse? It was registered under Grizz’s formal name for anonymity. Even the address was connected to Grizz with the calls directly forwarded to the clubhouse. It wasn’t a fluke or coincidence.

Jekyll stalked back into the living room and to the table, gripping the back of an empty chair. He stared over at Cypher, who furrowed his brows.

“What’s going on?”

“You can do that reverse number shit, right? Get me a name.”

Cypher nodded, lifting his glass to his lips.

Jekyll tossed the paper on the table. “Need it now.”

Cypher lowered his glass and grabbed the paper and his phone. Jekyll folded his arms, staring down at his brother. He knew it was her but wanted confirmation. A minute later, he got it. Cypher looked up and gave a subtle nod.

“It’s her.”

“Who?” Cross asked, but Cypher didn’t reply. Neither did Jekyll. He stormed out of the room, this time heading toward his bedroom in the back. He opened his door and slammed it shut.

Why the fuck was she calling him? He paced around the room, driving his hand over his head. Their one encounter had sent him off keel. He’d worked hard to keep her in the back of his mind since his release. Now, seeing her once, she’d invaded his mind and taken up permanent residency. The last thing he needed was verbal contact.

Fuck!

He circled the room, stopping at the edge of the bed. He pulled out his phone and dialed the number again.

“Hello?” Her tone was still off. Shaky and unsure.

He balled his fist, digging his short nails into his palm. Staring at the wall, he contemplated hanging up again. Speaking would drag her in deeper to a place she didn’t belong. With him. He pulled the phone from his ear and his finger hovered over the end button.

“Is anyone there?”

Yeah, I’m here. Fuck!

He lifted the cell to his ear. His tight grip threatened to shatter the phone in his hand.

“You looking for me?”

The line went completely silent. He couldn’t even hear her breath on the other end.
