The Innocent

“The. Rules.”

She clamped her lips. This man was stricter than the prison guards.

“There’s no assigned spaces, but you park in the front. The back lot is strictly forbidden.”

From what she saw, that wouldn’t be a problem. The parking lot was practically empty and huge.

“Okay.”

“No interaction with anyone on this floor. You come, and you go. That’s all.”

It was a bit harsh. It was always a good idea to get to know her neighbors. They’d look out for one another. But she could live with it.

“No guests,” he said.

“Oh.” She awkwardly chuckled and waved her hand. “I’m new here, and I don’t have a boyfriend, so I won’t be having anyone sleep over.”

His gaze hardened. “No guests, period.”

“Ever?” She raised her brows. “Like not even a friend coming over for dinner?”

“No. Guests. Only residents are allowed entry to the building.”

Could he really forbid her from having guests come into her apartment that she was paying for? Before she had the chance to ask, he held up his hand.

“The most important rule. You don’t tell anyone where you live.”

What?

“A P.O. box has been set up for you at the post office. It’s included in your rent.”

“Oh, I already have one since I was living in the motel. But I was going to…”

“Close it, and you’ll use the new one.”

Why would she need a post office box if she had a valid postal address?

“I can’t get mail delivered here?”

“No.”

She squinted, eyeing the man. “Is that legal?”

His gaze sharpened. “Your lease is month to month. I suggest if you like the apartments and the rent, you’ll abide by the rules. And if you don’t, you can find somewhere else to live.”

Fair enough. Legal or not, she’d follow the rules.

“Understood,” she muttered.

He started to walk down the hallway, and she called out.

“I didn’t get your name.”

He kept walking. “No, you didn’t.”

She let out a heavy sigh and walked into the apartment. The furniture, which she’d given no direction on where it should be placed, fit perfectly into her apartment. She peeked into the bedroom and smiled.

“They even set up the bed.” She looked around, noticing the dresser against the wall and her nightstand beside her bed. This would make unpacking a lot easier.
