Inez sighed heavily, turned, and snapped, “What?”
“What are the security guards’ names?”
“None of your fucking business.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to overstep. It’s just” —she shrugged— “I see them every time I come in or go out. I usually say hi, but I thought it’s more personal if I address them by their names.”
Inez shook her head, scowling. “People like you are the reason people like me don’t leave our homes.”
That was not a compliment. Imogene was about to apologize again but refrained. Keeping quiet was probably the best decision. But… “It was nice meeting you, Inez and thanks for letting Hank stay.”
Inez scoffed, shook her head, and walked to the hallway. “Another fucking problem child,” she muttered.
Imogene rushed behind her. “Inez, I promise I won’t be a problem.”
Inez ripped open the door, turned back, and sent her a seething glare. “Babygirl, you’re already a fucking problem.”
Inez walked out without another word. Imogene inched closer to the door when she heard Inez’s booming shout. “Does no one own a fucking watch anymore? Told you boys to be here at three.”
Imogene slowly started to close the door, but froze when she heard his voice.
“Traffic.”
One word was all it took. But she knew exactly who it was. She crept to the edge of the door and poked her head into the hallway.
There he was. Her heart raced, and butterflies flurried in her belly. It’d only been a few hours, but she hadn’t thought of anything other than him.
Jekyll.
What was he doing here?
****
Jekyll and the others were scheduled to leave at noon from Killcreek but decided to wait on Wraith and Cue to get back from their run. It put them behind by an hour. Then they spent another ninety minutes in construction traffic.
None of that mattered to Inez. She didn’t accept any type of excuses. Jekyll was preparing for a fifteen minute berating. Settle in, boys.
Inez parted her lips then shifted her gaze over his shoulder.
“Jesus Christ, now what?” Inez spun around, looking down the hall.
He glanced over his shoulder, and his muscles tightened.
“What the fuck, Jek?” Hyde muttered.
Two doors down from Inez’s apartment, Imogene stood in the doorway staring at them. Mainly Jekyll, and when she lifted her hand to wave, he felt another set of eyes boring into him like a death laser.
Inez may have been a foot and a half shorter, but she had enough presence to equal him in size.
“Don’t you dare fucking tell me you know her.” The threat was evident.
Fuck. He fisted his hands.
“Oh, he knows her.” Gent’s taunting earned him a severe scowl from all the brothers.
Jekyll glanced over Inez’s head, staring back at Imogene. She smiled, seemingly oblivious to the tension in the hallway. He lowered his voice, but his graveled tone spoke volumes of his rising anger.
“What the hell is she doing here?”
