Holding On to You

I grin at her. “You’re sure Peanut is a girl? What if they’re a boy?”

She crinkles her nose. “No, she’s a girl. I know it.”

“I guess we’ll find out in a few weeks. Now, let’s get your hair fixed so we can start our girls’ day.”

The number of choices offered is a little overwhelming. It’s been so long since I’ve gotten my nails painted that I have no idea where to start. London came in knowing she wanted pink and just had to pick which shade she liked best. I still have no clue which color I want.

When Gray got an emergency call from one of his clients this morning, London and I decided to have a spa day, starting with pedicures. We’re planning to do face masks and watch a movie this afternoon if Gray isn’t back yet.

“You should do pink too. Then we can match,” Luddy suggests.

I look over at her grinning face. “That’s a great idea. Thanks, baby.”

The attendant leads us to the pedicure chairs. Luddy’s has butterfly wings on the back and is the perfect size for her little legs to reach the basin. I sit next to her while the water fills our tubs.

Over the next few minutes, she jabbers on and on about how we’re having a girls’ day while Gray works and what the rest of our plans are for the afternoon. She keeps the entire salon entertained with her stories, and all I can do is listen to this social butterfly of a girl who acts just like her dad when she’s around people.

The door chimes, and I suddenly get all fluttery when I see Grayson at the threshold. His dirty jeans and cowboy boots are paired with a Carhartt coat and cowboy hat. The man is too attractive for his own good.

The second his eyes land on mine, I’m hit with another moment of wonder. This incredible man only has eyes for me, despite the gorgeous brunette checking him out while she gets a manicure. Her attention on my man doesn’t even bother me because there’s not a single ounce of doubt in my heart about how Gray feels about me.

I’ve been so spoiled since I moved home that I hardly recognize myself anymore. The confidence Grayson has instilled in me just by making me feel like the center of his whole world is incredible. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it.

He strides over to us with a look of determination on his face. “I was hoping I could catch you while you’re still here. I was feeling a little left out and didn’t wanna go home without you girls.”

I tilt my chin up, silently asking for a kiss. He smirks before obliging me.

“Daddy! You should get a pedicure too!” London bounces in her seat.

“Uh, I hadn’t planned on it, but I guess I could. What do I do about my boots?”

Tanya, our attendant, waves him off. “It’s slow today, so y’all can hang until you’re dry.”

He shrugs. “All right then. Cue up the back massager.”

His quip makes all the women in the salon giggle, and they watch in awe as this rough country boy takes off his boots and rolls up his jeans purely because his daughter asked him to.

“So you’re getting a sister?” Tanya asks London, getting back to their conversation before Gray interrupted.

“Mm-hmm. We call her Peanut right now.”

“We don’t actually know for sure if it’s a girl or boy. We haven’t wanted to find out,” I explain.

“Have you guys decided on names yet?” Tanya asks.

I glance over at Gray, who just shrugs at me as if to say you can share if you want.

“We’re gonna name her Reina.”

My eyebrows fly up my forehead at London’s declaration. “We are?”

At the baby shower the girls threw me last week, Grayson and I shared the names we were leaning toward, and Reina was one of them if Peanut is a girl. I had no idea London had been listening. She was playing with her friends almost the whole time.

“Yep.”

“Again, I ask, what if they’re a boy?”
