“I got Sax to talk about the Dark King, like I was supposed to.” Isaacs bragged. “Although --just as I predicted-- he knew nothing important. That moron was useless until literally his dying day.”
“He told us Ben is dead.” Daven reminded him.
Isaacs made a “who cares about that guy?” sort of face. “I said important. Although, I also totally predicted that Sax murdered Ben, come to think of it. I’m fucking amazing at investigating shit. Sullivan should hire me for the human police.” Sloshing through the rivers of blood and rain mixing on the pavement, he nonchalantly went back to looking for butterflies.
“See? Isaacs questioned him. Keeping Sax alive after that was never the plan.” Mannus told Daven, unwilling to back down.
“Yes, it was so the plan! We were supposed to follow Isaacs around, keeping back so Saxon didn’t see. Then, we grab Sax when he shows up and interrogate him for information about the stalker.” Daven glanced Isaacs’ way. “Didn’t you and I discuss that?”
“Honestly, I don’t know who I was talking to. I still can’t tell you guys apart.”
“We look nothing alike!” They chorused.
“You weren’t worried about Isaacs, because you already had the Light Phases watching him.” Randa realized, blinking up at Kahn.
“Of course. You value him, so we protect him.” Kahn wrapped an arm around her shoulders, moving slowly so she had time to retreat. She didn’t retreat. Instead, she leaned against him. He pressed a kiss to the top of her head and let out a shaky breath. “You’re sure you’re okay?” He murmured into her hair.
“I’m fine. I’m happy Saxon’s gone. Seeing someone hacked to death just… surprised me. For a second it was like a horror movie.”
“Get used to it. You’re a Light Phase now. Pretty soon horror movies will be too tame for you.” Mannus said cheerily.
Kahn flashed him an irritated look. “Would you just get rid of the damn bodies, so she isn’t traumatized?
Mannus grew concerned. “Is Randa traumatized? Hell, we can bury Sax on her front lawn, so she can see the grave every day and know he’s still dead. That’ll help.”
Daven nodded.
”That’s very thoughtful, but I’m fine.” Randa stressed. “Please bury him somewhere else.”
The brothers exchanged a look. “Sullivan’s yard?”
“I was thinking the same thing.”
Randa refused to listen to that idea. If she listened, she’d have to stop it, and she was too emotionally exhausted to stop it. Instead, she leaned against Kahn. His body felt unexpectedly wonderful against hers.
“I’m glad that the whole stalking nightmare is over and none of you were hurt.” She ran a palm over Kahn’s arm, trying not to ogle his muscles. “How did you hide a sword at the restaurant?”
“I invented cloaking technology for the blades, using Light energy to change the refractive properties of metal. It lets us take our swords everywhere.”
She blinked at his casual explanation. “You’re so good at inventing things, Kahn.”
“I haven’t been. Not for a long time.” He gazed down at her tenderly. “But now I’m getting ideas again. Being with you inspires me.”
Randa chewed on her lower lip. “I saw Vandal in your memories. He took some of your drawings. He said he was going to make weapons with them, but I don’t see how. It seemed like your designs were mostly for dolls.”
Kahn shook his head in disgust. “Weapons are all Vandal can think about, but I make more than just tools of war. I create things for the people I care about. Those are my favorite inventions.” He arched a brow. “What would you like me to make for you, my Match?”
She ran a hand over his chest. “I have everything I need.”
“But I can give you more. I want to. I can start with something small, if you’d rather. I have a lot of ideas to improve your phone.”
Her phone was already perfectly functional, but Randa didn’t want to discourage his creativity. “You can improve my phone, any way you like.” She snuggled closer to his side, feeling safe. “If you could un-improve my TV, that would also be great. I miss Antiques Roadshow.”
Kahn chuckled and gave her a squeeze.
“Sorry! Steve wouldn’t let me leave until I paid for the food we didn’t eat.” Julius came running up, his eyes taking in the gory crime scene. “Hey, great! We can scratch Saxon off the Must Kill list.”
