"You could give him something for the effort," Dane says through a mouthful of oatmeal cookie.
I roll my eyes and gather another handful of invoices. "I’m not interested in Ronan."
"No kidding," Rafe laughs.
Dane brushes crumbs from his hoodie onto the floor. "I reckon he's still hoping you'll change your mind."
"He'll be waiting a long time."
Rafe studies me over the rim of his mug. "So."
Here we go.
"You're twenty-three."
"And?"
"When was the last time you actually went with a lad?"
Heat creeps into my cheeks.
My hand skates to the chain hidden beneath my jumper, my thumb finding the gold F first.
Threaded beside it, hidden against my skin, sits my engagement ring.
Dane drops the front legs of his chair onto the floor with a thud and leans forward, elbows on his knees.
"Hang on..." His eyes narrow. "You're hiding something."
I shake my head and let out a forced laugh. This would be the perfect opportunity to come clean, but I need Saint to back me up.
"No, I'm not."
"Sera."
"I'm not."
"You are."
Outside, movement catches my eye. Saint stands beneath the overhang of the main barn, sleeves rolled to his forearms while he tightens the latch on one of the feed bins.
Keira leans against the doorframe beside him, a mug cradled in her hands.
He says something I can't hear, and she laughs.
Like really laughs, and he nudges her shoulder with his own. She bumps him back and smiles up at him, so fucking infatuated with my big brother.
They make it look...easy.
Like loving each other is worth it.
If I don't tell him today, he'll hear it from someone else. And after everything that's happened, I know he’s the only one who’ll understand.
I push my chair back. "I'm away to speak to Saint."
Rafe frowns. "You’re leaving us with this shit?"
“You’ll manage.”
