Rex was pretty much the last person Rachel would consider dating. Of course, Milo thought that about Max, too. “Sure, I’ll see what I can find out.”

“Thanks, man.”

The crowd dispersed, and Milo hung back to wait for Rachel. She spoke to a few people, then walked over to him.

“Did you have a nice nap?”

“Actually, I did.” He smiled. “The dude was boring.”

“A necessary evil. I need to keep the school board happy.”

They headed for the exit. “What’s your view on dating staff these days?”

“You mean other than you? I’d prefer not to. Way too much drama. Why?”

“Rex asked if you were single.”

“Mr. Algebra?”

“Yeah.” Milo opened the door for her, and they went outside.

“Tell him I’m in a very serious relationship.”

“Okay. Are you…still in a relationship?”

Rachel sighed. “Yes. Max is so…innocent.”

“You’re only making it worse by dragging it out.”

“I know. I’ll do it this weekend. He wants to take me to that Bed and Breakfast in Riverton.”

Milo stopped walking. “You can’t go away for the weekend with him, then break up. That’s just…mean.”

“I really like that place.”

“Rachel.”

“You’re right. I’m sorry. I’ll cancel.”

“Or break up with him.”

“Or that.”

They continued to the parking lot, and he walked her to her car. She touched his arm. “Have a good, sickeningly domestic night with Wilda and Caleb.”

“I will.”

“So, she’s finally come around for real?”

“Unless she changed her mind again today.”

“I’m sure she’s at home counting the minutes until you walk through the door.”

He opened the car door for her. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

She got into the car. “School starts at 8:15.”

“Funny.” He closed her door, then moved a few feet away as she started the engine and backed up. With a wave, she drove off.
