“He can’t possibly be as good and sweet…generous…there has to be something I’m not seeing.”
Rachel laughed. “Like Dark Milo?”
“I guess, yeah.”
“No. What you see is what you get. It’s kind of annoying, actually.”
“I can see that.”
Milo walked through the door. “What’s annoying?”
“You.” Rachel turned to him. “You forgot I was coming, didn’t you?”
“Um…” He pointed at her. “The attic.”
“Bingo.”
“I thought. I did remember. I just forgot that today was Sunday. What happened to Saturday?”
Wilda stood. “You helped me move in?”
“Right. I lose track of time on the weekends.”
Rachel laughed. “You should see what a three-day weekend does to him.”
“I’m screwed up for the whole next week.” He set a bag on the counter. “So, the attic.”
Wilda took her cup to the sink. “You have an attic?”
“Yes. I have an attic full of crap.”
Rachel came up to him and took his arm. “Not all junk. There has to be some treasure in there.”
Wilda raised an eyebrow. “You’ve never gone through the attic?”
“It’s kind of scary up there.”
Rachel laid her head against his shoulder. “I’m here to protect him.”
“Until we see a spider.”
She moved away from him. “Don’t! I’ve convinced myself there are no spiders up there.”
“Okay. We’ll go with that, then.”
Wilda rinsed her cup out and set it in the dish drainer. “Can I come, too?”
“Sure.”
“Will it be safe for Caleb?”
“I don’t see why not.”
“I’ll go get him.”
Rachel took Milo’s arm again. “We’ll meet you in the upstairs hallway.”
Wilda left the kitchen, and Rachel hugged Milo. “I think this new roommate thing is going to work out nicely.”
