“I think this was it. Thank you.”

He backed up toward the door. “I hope you’ll be comfortable here, Wilda.”

“I’m sure I will.”

“It’s a great bed and all, but I really don’t want to inherit it any time soon.”

“I think you’re stuck with us for a while.”

Chapter fifteen

“Come see me, silly.”

After helping Wilda with the bed, Milo went to the kitchen to start dinner. One of the few dishes he made that everyone seemed to like was an enchilada casserole with green enchilada sauce. The sauce was simmering on the stove, and he dipped a spoon in to taste it.

Wilda came in through the door. “That smells wonderful.”

“Thank you. Tastes pretty good, too.” He picked up another spoon, then dipped it in the sauce and held it out to her.

She hesitated for a moment, then tasted the sauce. “Oh my gosh.”

“Good?”

“Yes. You made it from scratch?”

“It was my grandmother’s recipe.” He covered the pot. “Will Caleb eat enchiladas, or should I make him something else?”

“He’ll eat enchiladas if it’s not too spicy. I think he’ll love this.”

“Good.”

“When do we eat?”

“Hmm. I’m about ready to put it together. So, an hour at the most.”

“Caleb and I will be in the room putting toys away.”

“Sounds fun.”

When the casserole was a few minutes away from coming out of the oven, Milo went to Wilda’s door. “How’s it going in here?”

Caleb went to him and took his hand, then pulled him into the room and over to the shelf.

“Wow. Did you do that all by yourself?”

Caleb shook his head and pointed at Wilda.

“Ah. A little help from Mom?” Caleb pulled a book from the shelf and handed it to Milo. “Do you want me to read this to you?” Caleb nodded. “We’ll do that after dinner. Right now, it’s time to eat.”

Wilda walked over to them. “After dinner and bath.”

Caleb sighed, then laid the book on his bed next to several stuffed animals.

As Wilda walked through the empty dining room, she stopped for a moment. “Should we have put the table in here?”

“Hmm. I like eating in the kitchen. It’s cozier. Once this room is done, though, a big old table of some sort should go in here.”

“For your fancy dinner parties?”
