“Oh my gosh. Should I try to talk to him about it?”

“Try, but I wouldn’t push him. He seems better now that you’re here.”

“We were doing so well, too.”

“Do you mind if I talk to him for a minute?” She shook her head, and Milo opened the back door, then sat next to Caleb. “How are you doing?”

Caleb shrugged, then leaned close and whispered, “Bastards.”

Milo covered his smile with a hand. “Um…okay. You’re going to be alright, kid.”

Milo got out of the car, and Wilda cocked her head. “What?”

“He’s going to be fine.”

“What just happened?”

“Who might he have learned the word bastard from?”

“Oh my gosh. Did he?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s one of Mathias’ favorite descriptive words.”

“Well, it’s quite fitting in this situation.”

“I can’t punish him for saying it.”

“Nope.”

She sighed. “I guess I'd better get him home. We brought some boxes over this afternoon.”

“Is Saturday still the big day?”

“I believe so, yes.”

“I’ll cook you and Mr. Potty Mouth dinner.”

Chapter fourteen

“I’m like a vampire.”

Milo was latching the door of the trailer he’d borrowed from his dad when Wilda walked up to him.

“I can’t believe you guys got it all in there.”

“It was touch and go near the end. I wasn’t sure the two chairs were going to make the trip.”

“Thank you for helping. It would’ve been hard for Mathias to do all of this by himself.”

“No problem.” He checked the time. “I can call in a pizza if you want to go pick it up while we get this stuff to the house.”

“Sure. Caleb is a little picky when it comes to pizza. Can we do pepperoni on half?”

“We can make it all pepperoni. I’m fine with that.” He took out his phone. “I’ll make the call.”

Maggie’s cheery voice answered, “Rocco’s Pizza.”
