“Okay.”
“Don’t leave.”
“I won’t.”
He headed for the building and walked through the door. Wilda sat in the front seat with the door open. A few minutes later, Milo returned with his messenger bag. “I had to take Frenchie to Rachel’s office. Let’s go to the park. Caleb can play while we talk.”
“I’ll meet you there.”
A few minutes later, they were sitting near the pond while Caleb explored and tried to sneak up on the ducks.
Milo turned to Wilda. “Tell me what’s wrong.”
“My landlord just gave us thirty days' notice.”
“What?”
“He sold the house. Never even told us it was for sale.”
“Jerk.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, you’ll find something else.”
“We barely found this place. There isn’t much to begin with, and something in our budget is even harder.”
“My family knows a lot of people in town. We’ll find you something.”
“Thank you. But that’s only half of my bad afternoon.”
“What else?”
“Mathias got hired on for a really big job…in Boise.”
“He’s moving to Boise?”
“He said he’ll commute home every weekend. I don’t know how practical that is, though.”
“It’s doable as long as the weather stays good. This time of year, it should.”
“The thought of him not being here every day is…”
“Scary.”
“So, so scary. Which is totally selfish of me.”
“It’s not selfish. You depend on him.”
She shrugged. “That’s my tale of woe.”
He took her hand. “Thank you for telling me.”
He stood and paced back and forth for a moment. “Um…this may be a crazy idea, but think about it before you say no.”
“Okay.”
He stopped in front of her. “I have a huge house with six empty bedrooms.”
