“No. This isn’t a casual dating situation for me.”
“Good. Does the thought of filling this house up with kids scare you?”
She laughed. “That might take me a little longer to get behind. But I’m not opposed to it.”
“Also good.” He pulled her in close. “I love you, Wilda. I love Caleb. Hell, I even love Mathias. Ever since you moved in here, I can’t see the place without you in it.”
“So, at some point, do Caleb and I move upstairs? Or do you move into the downstairs suite?”
“Hmm. I’m not sure I want to give up the turret.”
She nodded. “That’s a tough one. I vote for the turret, too.”
“I think once you finish the dining room, you should get to work on one of the upstairs bedrooms for Caleb.”
“It’ll be next on my list.”
He kissed her. “I should get back.”
“Go have fun. Will you come say goodnight before you go to bed?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I’m asleep?”
“I’ll wake you up with a kiss.”
When Milo returned to the parlor, Abe and Luke were playing pool. He sat down next to Wes. “Who’s winning?”
“Luke is trying to redeem himself after losing to Rachel. But he’s having a rough game.” Wes took a sip of his beer. “I sure like Wilda.”
“I sure like her, too.”
“It’s kind of obvious.”
“Can’t help it.”
“I’ve been telling Cassandra about Caleb. She’d really like to meet him. And Wilda, too, of course.”
“You should come over this week for dinner.”
“We’ll do that. How’s the boy’s speech coming along?”
“He’s talking pretty regularly now. Still just to me, Wilda, and the dog, but it’s progress.”
“That’s great. Maybe he just needed a change of scenery.”
“I think so. Living in the house where he lost his dad must have been hard. For her too, actually.”
“Yeah.”
“A fresh start has been good for both of them.”
The men stayed until nearly two, then they called it a night. Milo walked them out to their vehicles.
“Please drive safely, guys.”
Justin opened the door to his Jeep. “We will caravan to town.”
