Her words stop me.

She’s right. Callie had a life before she found me bleeding in the woods. A business. A sister. Friends. A dog she somehow acquired while stalking me.

I'm the one bringing danger into it. I don't get to take the rest away.

“Fine.”

She blinks. Apparently she wasn't expecting that.

“Fine?”

“You drive.”

Her eyes narrow with suspicion now.

“Who are you, and what have you done with Roman?”

“You follow me.”

“There he is.”

“We don't take the direct route. If I turn, you turn. If I call and tell you to keep driving, you keep driving.”

Callie considers it, then nods. “Okay.”

“Okay?”

“See how easy compromise is?”

I stare at her.

She smiles. “I feel like we're growing.”

“Get in the fucking car, Chaos.”

Her smile gets bigger.

I keep scanning for any sign of Mercer, checking the rearview mirror every few seconds to make sure no one is following us.

We should’ve been to my place ten minutes ago. Instead, I have us on a route that will take another twenty minutes.

My phone rings. I hit the button, since my phone is connected to the stereo via Bluetooth.

“Do you see anything?” I ask her.

“Possibly Canada.”

I glance at her SUV in the rearview mirror.

“If we’re going there, I’m going to need another bag.”

“No. You already brought enough.”

“Alibi needs his passport.”

I hang up.
