“I killed him.”

“Are you out of your fucking mind?!”

I’m really starting to think he might be, because he doesn’t stop there.

“I held him down until he burned to death in the fireplace in the game lounge,” he says calmly.

“I’ll be sure to put it in the report,” Gav spits. The normally calm Alpha sounds like he’s two seconds away from snapping, jaw and fists both clenched in anger.

“He was a mole,” Vae adds before Daxen can answer. The two share a look I can’t decipher.

“It’s true,” Daxen confirms. “But you’ll need to ask Vae for specifics. I wasn’t there for that part. I came in right as he threw the fire poker across the room in an attempt to kill the Omega.”

“What?!” Caelan shoots to his feet. I reach for his hand as he turns to Soren and growls. “And where the hell were you? Explain to me why you left our Omega alone for so long; someone nearly succeeded in killing her.”

“I told him to go!” I shout, twisting to my right and craning my neck back to see Caelan’s face.

“I didn’t want to,” Soren explains, and when I twist my head to the left, I have to crane my neck back even further.

Why are they both so tall?

“I’ve been gone for nearly four straight days with no outside contact. And there’s something about the wards you all have up that interferes with our mind-link, and just a heads up—there’s no fucking cell service in your dungeon.”

“There aren’t any wards,” Daxen cuts in.

“Bullshit,” Soren snaps. “Don’t lie to me.”

“I’m not! There are no fucking wards! HQ is way too big to maintain them long-term. Besides, my surveillance is more than sufficient.”

“You shouldn’t have left her,” Caelan spits, and my head snaps to the right.

“I told him to,” I repeat, but no one’s paying any attention to me down here.

“Again, I didn’t have a choice!”

“You did. And you chose to leave our Mate alone. And she almost died.”

“That’s not fair!”

I feel like I’m in the middle of an Alpha tennis match and both my neck and chest are starting to hurt. My Omega whines, covering her ears as both Alphas’ voices get louder and angrier with each rebuttal.

I shoot a helpless look toward Branwen, who’s across the table, watching with an amused expression. I catch her eye and mouth, help me.

Her smirk grows into a mischievous grin, and she stands, leaning over the table to rummage through the bowl of fruit that Silas apparently commandeered at some point. He doesn’t even notice, too lost in the back-and-forth happening between Gavran, Vae, and Dax.

Based on the vein throbbing at Gavran’s temple and the finger Vaelenor keeps pointing at me, I assume they’re arguing about what happened with Cage.

I’m seconds away from crawling beneath the table in search of somewhere dark and quiet to hide when Branwen cups her hands around her mouth and shouts, “Oy!”

Nothing.

In fact, I’m pretty sure the Alphas are shouting even louder.

When I hear a string of Scottish curses, I realize Kane’s joined the argument with his Alpha. The only male not trying to make himself heard is Riven, who’s too busy squinting at the pages in one of his journals, mouthing words to himself like he’s not in the middle of a verbal war zone.

Out of nowhere, Soren cuts off mid-sentence and turns toward Branwen with a snarl. “Ow! What the actual fuck?”

What—
