“What have I done?” Leo cursed himself. The sound of his vomit sprayed the rock around him.
“It’s okay, Bryn. I’ve got you, Princess,” Adrian whispered as he lifted my head and chest, so I rested on his lap. “Leo, do something!”
I went to remove the protrusion from my chest, but Adrian’s hand stopped me, my pain turning to a dull ache.
“I’ll fucking kill you for this,” Adrian whispered to where Leo continued emptying the contents of his stomach.
My husband’s eyes shone bright with tears that hadn’t yet fallen.
I wanted to tell him that it was okay, that everything would be okay. But I didn’t think it would be.
I tried to squeeze his hands. His answering squeezes and tug on my left hand the last sensations I felt.
He was crying now, rocking us back and forth. Telling me he loved me over and over again.
Leo had crawled back to us, only for Adrian to kick out at him.
“Please, Adrian. I can help her.”
“Fuck you.”
Leo snapped his fingers, causing Adrian’s body to go prone.
“I’m going to help her, Adrian, and you’re going to let me.” Leo’s voice was firm, but back to normal. The madness that had consumed him before now gone.
I felt a tunnel of cold wind around us as I closed my eyes involuntarily.
I was so tired.
Everything felt so numb.
When I opened my eyes again, we were back on One, on the rooftop of the castle.
The sun was blinding and hurt my eyes to look at.
I shut them tightly.
I couldn’t stand to see the light.
Leo was mumbling to himself. “It’s a full moon tonight . . . there’s going to be an attack . . . yes . . . an attack . . .
“There’s been a breach at Stafford’s Portal,” Leo said, his voice sure and commanding. “Some sort of creatures have made it to the castle grounds. Adrian, you need to round up our troops.”
“No—” Adrian’s voice cracked.
“Listen to me,” Leo pressed him. “There’s been a breach, and Lady Brynlynn has been killed. When night comes, you need to gather our trusted troops. There’s been a breach at the portal.”
I wanted to scream at Adrian. Tell him not to listen to Leo. Leo was holding his mind somehow. He needed to fight against it. But I couldn’t say anything as I felt myself grow cold.
I felt the loss of Adrian’s heat as he shifted me onto Leo’s lap.
Tears leaked through the lids of my eyes. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to him.
To him.
Who was I thinking about?
“I’m sorry, Bryn, this was never supposed to happen.” That was Leo’s voice, remorseful, but cold. “I’ll see you soon,” he whispered, placing a kiss on my temple.
