“Er…” he mutters, the sound dying off slowly.

“Isla. Who else?” Turner says.

“Dude!” Ash punches him in his shoulder. “Shut up.”

“What?” Eyebrows pulled together, Turner scrutinizes him, then me. His jaw goes slack. “Wait, you didn’t know?”

My lungs constrict, making it hard to breathe. “Know what?”

Ash stands and looks me in the eye. “You heard Isla’s coach is moving to Boston, right?”

I nod, teeth clenched.

“Isla is going too. She said it’s—”

My stick hits the floor with a clatter, and I rush out of the locker room. My limbs tremble as I pace the hallway, my vision going spotty. A murderous energy swims beneath my skin. This is not fucking happening. No fucking way.

The sound of a slamming door halts me in my tracks. I snap my head toward it and lock eyes with Isla. She’s dressed in black leggings, a pink hoodie, and a black jacket. Her hair is still a bit wavy from last night, and it cascades around her shoulders.

“Hi,” she says quietly.

The single word is loud in the empty hall. It’s like a scream, sending goose bumps scattering all over my skin.

I stomp toward her, fury rolling through me. “Were you even going to tell me?”

She doesn’t step back when I get in her face. She frowns and grips the strap of her bag tighter.

“Were you?” I tower over her, my pulse hammering in my throat. “Didn’t you think I should know?”

“Wanna be more specific? If I know what you’re talking about, maybe I can answer your question.”

A short laugh escapes my lips. “Always so innocent.” I duck my head, glowering. “When were you going to tell me you’re moving to Boston? Once you were already there?”

Her mouth pops open, a soft huff leaving her. “What?”

“Are you going to deny it?” I clench my fists at my sides. “When I walked into the locker room, Ash and Turner were talking about you following your coach to Boston.”

“I’m not denying anything. I am moving to Boston. It’s what’s best for my career.” She skirts me and rushes to the door.

Fueled by anger, I dart after her and grab her elbow.

She yanks out of my grip and glares at me. “What do you want?”

“I am your best friend,” I bite out, “and you told me nothing.”

She lifts her chin. “Guess you know how I feel now, huh?”

My blood boils, but I press on. “Ash knew. Fucking Turner too, but not me.” Sienna’s words from last night flash in my head. “Are you and Turner together?”

She presses her hand to her forehead. “This is bullshit. Cade is just a friend.”

“Sienna said you two are dating. Considering he knew about your move and I didn’t, I’m starting to think she’s right.”

She purses her lips, her nostrils flaring. “Did she tell you that before or after your make-out session in the hallway?”

I rear back, breaking into a cold sweat, my body thrumming with an energy I’m not familiar with. “Were you spying on me?”

“No.” She throws her hands in the air. “I was worried about you. Wanted to make sure you were okay. I wouldn’t have bothered to check on you if I knew I’d stumble on you two kissing.”
