Only Ever You

“You’re impossible.”

His fingers tighten around mine. “And yet you’re still holding my hand.”

Scoffing, I pull away, but he only tightens his fingers around mine.

A chilly breeze sweeps along the street, making me shiver. Before I can complain, he steers me toward a small coffee shop tucked between a bookstore and a flower shop.

Inside, I’m immediately engulfed in warmth. The place smells like fresh coffee, cinnamon, and baked pastries. Soft music plays in the background, and nearly every table is occupied by students studying or talking quietly.

It’s cozy and sweet; I like it.

“What are we doing here?”

“Getting a drink and something sweet. I’ve been told the pastries here are delicious.”

Joy lights me up inside. “I’d love a hot chocolate and cheesecake if they have it.”

“I’ll go order.” He plants a kiss on my temple. “Go sit at the table by the window.”

Once I’m seated, I look around, people-watching. A few years ago, I would’ve pulled out my phone and scrolled. Now, I’m limiting the time I spend on socials and games. They provide me with a dopamine boost, yes, but I noticed how unmotivated I become afterward, so I cut way back. Besides, staying present is so much more interesting.

“Here you go.” Michael sets a tray on the table, then he shucks off his bomber, and throws it over the back of his seat. “It all smells and looks delicious.”

A few girls from school sit two tables away, stealing glances at Michael. I can’t blame them. My boyfriend is gorgeous. Taking my cue from them, I check him out again. A tingling sensation starts in my lower abdomen. The way my body reacts to his closeness is still so unreal.

“Tuck in.” He pulls a slice of chocolate cake toward him.

As we sip hot chocolate and make small talk, my attention keeps drifting back to Michael. My mind spins, considering what the surprise could be.

I want to be patient, but the smug little smile that tugs at his lips makes it impossible.

“So…”

He cocks an eyebrow. “So?”

“Are you going to tell me what we’re doing next?”

“Maybe I’m enjoying your squirming.”

I roll my eyes. “You’re annoying.”

“And you’re impatient.” Smirking, he reaches into his bomber jacket and places a small box on the table between us.

A breath gets stuck in my throat as I stare at the box. “What is it?”

“This one is for your sweet sixteen.”

My heart skips. “Wh-what?”

“You came to my birthday party. You gave me a hockey tape decorated with inspirational quotes in your handwriting. I still have it, you know. I keep it for special occasions and important games.” He takes a deep breath. “And I forgot about yours.” He pushes the box toward me.

My eyes veil with tears as I pick up the little box. I open it slowly, finding a pair of beautiful earrings winking back at me. They’re smaller than the tip of my thumb, yet detailed enough that every arm of the snowflake stands out. Tiny diamonds glimmer against the silver, making the earrings look as if they were carved from ice.

“Do you like them?” His voice is quiet and a bit raspy.

“They’re gorgeous. So delicate.” I look up, blinking back tears. “They’re perfect. Thank you so much.”

With a smile, he leans over the table and cups my cheek. I move closer, bringing my lips to his in a slow and gentle kiss. The world around us fades away, and, honestly? That’s the only way I want it to be.
