I let out a happy moan and nod as sleep tugs me under.
I wake up later, on the edge of orgasm, and realize Powers must have been slowly fucking me for a while.
“There you are,” he whispers as he nips my ear. “Come for me, baby. Come on my cock, and then you can go back to sleep.”
I’m helpless to ignore him. I cry out his name as I tighten around him, my breath stalling in my chest as my orgasm washes over me.
“Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he growls into my ear before he fills me up.
I feel him soften, but instead of pulling out, he keeps himself inside me. “Sleep, baby girl, I’ve got you.”
I drift off again, content in a way I don’t think I’ve felt before, which is why, when the phone rings later, it jars me out of my sleep. Immediately, panic consumes me.
“It’s okay, it’s mine,” Powers soothes me, but it does nothing to alleviate my fears.
It’s bright out, and a glance at the clock shows we slept later than I thought we would. Powers is right—there is no reason to worry, and yet it’s like I have a sixth sense that’s kicked in. As I wait for him to answer, I already know whatever news he’s about to hear is going to be bad.
The expression dances across his face before he curses. “Fuck!” I move closer, waiting on edge as he looks at me with regret.
“Was anyone hurt?”
I tense, waiting for those answers.
“Okay, good. I’ll fill Lil in, and we’ll head up to the saloon as soon as we’re dressed.” He hangs up and reaches for my hand. “Everyone is fine,” he tells me, which settles some of the panic at least.
“But?”
“But there was a drive-by shooting at ELM this morning.”
Chapter Twenty-One
POWERS
Havoc yells for us to quiet down as he stands and leans over the table.
We look over to him, each of us as pissed as the next. Church isn’t as full as it usually is, but with as many as we’ve been having lately, Havoc has been more lenient about attendance. The only reason I’m here is that Midas is working today. Otherwise, I’d be at the track.
“Tell me what happened,” Havoc says quietly, but each of us can hear the barely contained violence in his voice.
Kruger rubs his hand over his face, looking tired but alert. “I wasn’t in. Con’s been helping out Ambros at the gym.”
Ambros nods. I’m guessing he’s watching it now, too.
“Because of that, I’ve been driving Theo to school, especially since everything went down.”
“I still can’t believe they’re open already.” G sighs.
“The damage to the building was superficial. Most of the classes have been moved to the outdoor classrooms. Besides, they break for the summer soon,” Circus explains.
Havoc nods and spins, rotating his finger for Kruger to continue.
“I was on my way in, later than I usually would be, when Nathan called to tell me about the drive-by. I pulled up at the same time the cops did, so they got in my fucking way when I was trying to talk to him. We were lucky. Given the nature of the business, I anticipated issues, so I had new windows retrofitted and reinforced doors installed. The brickwork took most of the damage. Though the windows will need replacing because of all the splintering, they did their job.”
“That’s some good news at least.”
“What did the cops have to say for themselves?” I ask, biting back my sneer. I’m still pissed about how shit went down with Lil.
“Not much. They’ve put out a BOLO on the car.”
