“You’ve never had a problem sleeping in my bed before.”
Havoc glares at him. Powers folds his arms over his chest, not giving a fuck. “We have never crossed that line—never touched each other like that. I’ve already told you. I’m done with you questioning that. You either believe me, or you don’t. Not much I can do about that. But you really think, even if I were unable to help myself, that she’d let me risk my patch for her?”
Havoc tenses, and he takes a second before responding. “Fine, she stays with you. You aren’t a prospect anymore, and I’ll leave her in your capable hands.”
I bite my lip and count to ten while the menfolk barter me away like a prized cow.
“Guys, enough. One of you go find the doctor and see when she can get discharged,” Tink orders.
“It would be a good start, considering I don’t even know what happened to me.”
“What’d you mean you don’t know?” Powers frowns.
I stare at him, wondering how else he wants me to word it. “I don’t know what to tell you. I have no idea why I’m here. All I know is my body aches, and my head hurts.”
“That’s because you took quite a bump to it,” a doctor says as he walks in without knocking. Glad I wasn’t getting changed or anything.
I blow out a steadying breath, not sure why I’m feeling so touchy. The last few months have been brutal—so much so that I think anything meek and mild I had left in me has gone.
I reach up and inspect my head and find the bump he’s talking about at the base of my skull. I frown, wondering how I got it. As if reading my thoughts, the doctor looks through his notes. “Did I fall?”
“Perhaps, though it looks more like blunt-force trauma.”
“I don’t know what that means.”
“It means you were hit with something, likely a bat,” Powers says, making me blink.
I feel the bump again, this time realizing how incredibly lucky I am, all things considered.
“You have some substantial bruising over most of your body, particularly your shoulders, back, and thighs.”
I tense for a whole other reason now, my hands gripping the side of the bed for support. “Was I attacked? Was I ra…raped?” I whisper, holding my breath until he answers.
“Attacked? Possibly, but we ruled out sexual assault when you were admitted. Tests confirm you’ve not had any recent intercourse, and there was no tearing or damage or any fluids left behind. Your clothing appeared to be undisturbed, too.”
He’s so matter-of-fact about it all. I know that’s his job, but hearing him talk about what could have happened to me with zero inflection in his voice makes me want to stick a pen in his eye.
As if sensing my building anger, or maybe because of his own, Powers’s hand wraps around one of mine and squeezes it. “When can we take her home?”
“I’ll sign these forms for you, and you’ll be free to go. You’ll be sore for a few days, but over-the-counter meds will help. Same for any headaches. I’m confident you don’t have a concussion, but if anything seems off—your vision, for instance, or your balance—and you start throwing up, come straight back in.”
“I’ll keep an eye on her, doc. I know what to look out for,” Powers tells him.
The doctor nods before signing the chart with a flourish. “Please fill in the forms I’ll leave with you for our records and for insurance purposes.”
I tense but nod, agreeing with a smile. He hands me the forms before leaving the room. Nevaeh looks between Powers and me before she slips her arms through Havoc’s. “Let’s nip back to the hotel quickly. Lil will need something to wear home and could probably do with something to eat.”
Havoc looks like he wants to say no, but ultimately gives in to his old lady. “Don’t leave until we get back,” he orders.
“We won’t go anywhere unless there is an issue, but I’ll keep you updated if that happens,” Powers tells him.
Havoc nods. “We won’t be long.” He takes Nevaeh’s hand, and they both walk to the door. He stops through before he can close it, his eyes turning back to catch mine.
“I know there is a lot to get through, and this will be anything but easy, but it’s good to have you back, Lil. The club hasn’t been the same.”
I swallow a wave of emotion, swiping at the few stray tears that run down over my cheeks. “Thank you.”
He gives me a two-finger salute before pulling the door closed.
