“Fuck. Let me guess—local cops have their fingers up their ass, and you’re the closest expert on hand.”

“That about sums it up. I need equipment. Looks like the device is in the trunk of the car, but without popping it open to look, I don’t know what I’m dealing with. And I have no way of knowing if it will trigger the device.”

“Shit, okay. I have some shit on hand, but it’s not fancy.”

“I don’t need fancy. I need something that means I’ll make it home to my girl.”

He sucks in a sharp breath. “I’m on it. There somewhere I can land this bird?”

“Use my location. It will bring you to the high school. They have a huge football field out back. Just watch out for the kids. We’re trying to evacuate before school gets out.”

“Got it. I’m on my way.” He hangs up as both Kruger and Havoc reach me.

Judging from the looks on their faces, they either heard me or Nathan filled them in on what’s happening.

“There’s a fucking bomb?” Havoc snarls.

“Lucy thinks there’s one in that car. Can’t see anything on the exterior. My guess is that it’s in the trunk.”

“Has she ever been wrong?” Kruger questions.

I stare at him, which is all the answer he needs. My girl is never wrong.

“Where the fuck are the cops?”

“Nathan told them what went down. Don’t know any more than that, and I don’t give a shit. Right now, we need to get those kids out of—” My mouth snaps shut when we hear the fire alarms blaring from the school.

“Shit, what now?” Havoc groans.

“Not what. Who. My guess is Lil just lost her patience.”

“She’s not the only one.”

Kruger’s phone chimes. He pulls it out as a police cruiser turns the corner. I jog over to it, arms wide, forcing them to stop. When he does, I move to the driver’s window. The cop just looks at me.

“Dude, I don’t have time for this. There is a bomb in that car right there, and any kind of vibration might set it off.”

“Sir, back away from the car.”

I roll my eyes and turn my back on him, but I don’t move. I don’t trust this idiot not to start driving again.

“That was Nathan. Lil pulled the fire alarm. The principal is threatening to have her arrested, but protocol means the kids are heading out back to the evacuation point.”

“Good.” I look down at my watch, noting school is due out in ten.

His phone rings then. When he grabs it, his eyes widen. “It’s Theo.”

“If you don’t move out of the way, I’ll arrest you,” the cop says behind me. He must have lowered the window.

“If you arrest me, who are you gonna get to defuse the bomb?” I snap, my eyes on Kruger.

Kruger nods into his phone, a look of relief on his face. “No, I’ll tell him. And listen to Lil. She won’t let anything happen to you. Love you too, kid.” He hangs up and shoves his phone in his pocket again. “Lil kidnapped Theo from class—his words, not mine.” His lips twitch, making me think Theo has no problem getting kidnapped by a gorgeous woman.

“She set off the fire alarm, got most of the kids out of the building, and headed to the far end of the football field. Lil called Con to come, but to park near the station. She’s sending Theo to him so he’ll be safe at the clubhouse.”

“Good, though I’d feel a lot fucking better if she went back to the clubhouse herself.”

“Good luck with that. We tend to attract women who run into danger rather than away from it,” Kruger drawls, and he’d know. Delphi blew herself up to save Legs and Midas.
