“It’s what’s in your office,” she says, and my hand tightens on her leg.

“The scallops?”

Emily shrugs. “A favorite of mine.” She smiles a little wider, the look sending my heart racing. “And the tequila is for me, of course.”

“Well now…aren’t you full of surprises?”

I watch her as my hand grazes the hem of her dress. She doesn’t push me away or pull me closer. She just waits to see what I’ll do next.

“I don’t normally like surprises,” I say, working the material with my fingers until it is high enough that I’m touching skin.

Emily’s leg is cool against the heat of my hand, but it does nothing to extinguish the fire burning under my skin. I’m this close to fucking her right here in the booth. We are in our own world, and no one else exists. I’m a cold-blooded killer, in and out of court, who lives with strict rules and aloof attachment. But this siren pushes all my buttons.

Her eyes darken with lust as I trace the inside of her thigh. I’m so fucking hard, and all I can hear is the blood rushing in my ears.

“Alden, someone may see,” she says, but spreads her legs wider.

“Let them.”

My finger reaches her pussy, and I almost come on the spot when I don’t feel any underwear—not even a thong.

Burying my face in the side of her neck, I breathe her in and shudder. My nose traces a line up to her ear, and I nip at her delicate earlobe adorned with a tiny diamond stud. I’m going to get her a larger set, and a necklace, and a bracelet, and anything else I can find. I want her draped in diamonds while I fuck her.

“Devious woman,” I say softly. “Do you have any idea what you’re doing to me?”

I slowly rub circles on her clit. She tries to hold back her body’s reaction but can’t quite stop her hips from wiggling.

“Have you ever done something like this in public?” She shakes her head. “Touch me,” I order.

Emily looks across the room, but the few tables we can see from our position are not paying attention, and the long, black tablecloth should easily hide our activities. Emily places her hand on my leg and slides it up to my aching cock. Her fingers trace my shaft, and I bite back a groan. The insanity she causes within me is infuriating and addictive. She runs her fingers up my zipper, but then someone speaks, destroying the moment and our little bubble.

“Well, don’t you two look comfortable,” a cold, sharp voice bites out.

We look up to see Detective Jen Hiller standing at our table.

She crosses her arms and glares at us.

Emily’s legs close, and her hand disappears. I swear, I’m going to kill this woman for interrupting our moment.

“So cozy, in fact, that it makes me wonder if you had a reason to want Rob gone.”

Emily stiffens and grips my arm. I flat-out refuse to move my hand from between her thighs. The heat coming off her pussy warms my fingers.

“I don’t think I like what you’re insinuating, detective. Oh, my apologies. I guess it’s Ms. Hiller, since you’ve been suspended and have no authority to make such a wild and inappropriate accusation. Tell me, is this what you’re doing with your free time? Following innocent people? Determined to get yourself fired? Pretty pathetic if you ask me. And all for what? Information you think Emily has, yet you have no proof. You sound oddly obsessed with Emily. Why is that? It’s not like what you and Rob had was serious. You were nothing more than a stand-in on long work nights before he could go home to who he truly wanted,” I say, picking at what I’m sure is a gaping wound.

Jen’s face darkens into a storm of emotions.

“You know nothing about me, or what Rob and I shared. He loved me,” she says.

Yup, definitely hit a nerve. I make a show of picking up my wine and taking a sip before continuing.

“Your devotion to a man who didn’t love anyone but himself is fascinating.”

The corner of my mouth turns up as I picture hanging her from chains and carving the flesh from her bones.

“I came to tell you that this is not over. I still intend to find out what she is hiding, and to let you know that I’m watching both of you. I don’t think Rob’s death was an accident.”

Her voice gets a little louder, and I notice a few tables that were ignoring us are now looking our way.
