“And what things would those be?” I asked coyly.
He leaned down until his breath brushed my ear. “That you want me just as bad as I want you.”
Well, damn. Yeah, he had me. And I was tired of fighting. I slipped my hand into his.
“One dance.”
“Whatever you say, shorty.”
I swear I couldn’t stand the smug bastard. One dance. I could behave myself. Unfortunately, the DJ chose the exact moment we made it to the floor to switch from the innocent little love song Damien and Dream had been dancing to into something with a slow, filthy bass line. Saadiq pulled me against him.
“My type of shit,” he murmured.
“Of course it is.”
One big hand settled at the small of my back. The other held mine against his chest as we began moving together. I could feel his heartbeat beneath my palm.
“You look beautiful tonight, Apple.”
“Thank you. You look a’ight yourself.”
He laughed. “A’ight?”
“I know the great Saadiq Masters ain’t fishing for compliments. That’s so beneath you.”
“That’s funny coming from a woman who damn near swallowed her tongue when I walked in.”
I gasped. “You so full of yourself!”
“You looking at me like you wanna be full of me, too.”
I smacked his chest. He caught my hand before I could withdraw it and brought my fingers to his lips. He pressed a slow kiss to each tip.
“When you gon’ stop running from me, Apple?”
The teasing had disappeared from his voice. I looked up at him.
“I haven’t been running.”
“Okay.”
The disbelief in his voice was strong. My face wrinkled into a scowl.
“Don’t ‘okay’ me when you don’t believe me.”
“Then stop lying to both of us.”
I opened my mouth to deliver a suitably scathing response, but the words deserted me when his hand slid around my waist and he pulled me closer.
“Give me these next few days, Apple. For real. Just me and you.”
“And what happens when we get home?” I pressed.
“We figure that shit out together.”
I studied his face. The sincerity and desire there pulled at me, unraveled the threads of every worry I had.
“Okay.”
