Come Back To Me

by Tamsyn Bester

A week passed after my conversation with Connor. Vaughan had been good about giving me space, but after two days I couldn’t handle not seeing him. I tried accepting the loss of my memories on my own, but I realized that acceptance stemmed from the support of those you care about. I still got frustrated and some days were harder than others, but I had my family there to help me, and more importantly, I had Vaughan. We hadn’t started referring to each other as ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’, but he was my person and anything beyond that I didn’t care about. With the start of the Fall semester, we were all busier than usual, but my life sometimes felt too full. Even so, I was working toward making peace with what I’d lost and embracing what I’d gained.

Classes had barely started, but I was already spending a fair amount of time in the library, while Maddy spent most of her time in her dance classes on campus. I wanted to catch up with her, but had already made plans to see Vaughan for a late dinner. Maddy had also let me know that Jackson was coming over to our apartment tonight and that was code for ‘stay away’ in my book. Their sexcapades were not something I wanted to be privy to and more often than not they ended up in the living room with me walking in on them. Try getting rid of the image of your best friend bent over the sofa with your brother screwing her from behind. It was a miracle I wasn’t in therapy yet.

I checked the clock, and cursed loud enough to get a death glare from the girl sitting at the study carol opposite mine. I was going to be late for my plans with Vaughan.

I took my phone out of my pocket and sent him a text.

I’m late. X

Those bubbles appeared as he typed back.

What??? What do you mean you’re late?

I frowned at the screen.

I mean I’m late?

What else would I have meant?

He typed back.

Are you sure? Have you taken a test?

What was he going on about? I looked at the clock again. I was definitely going to be late. We had plans for seven-thirty p.m, and it was already quarter to seven. I was still in the library.

No, I typed back. I’m pretty sure I can tell the time. I’m late Vaughan.

I waited for him to respond.

Okay, but are you sure? Don’t you have to be at least ten days late before you can take a test?

What in the world.

I read over our conversation, and when I realized my mistake, I had to laugh. Instead of saying I was running late, I only said I was late and judging from Vaughan’s line of questioning he thought I was referring to my period. He had nothing to worry about in that department. I was absolutely not pregnant. In fact, Aunt Beverly was here two weeks ago, so there was no way I had a bun in the oven.

But, I decided to play with Vaughan a little more.

I’m positive, I texted.

I waited a whole five minutes before I got a response.

Okay. I’m on my way. Where are you?

I’m in the library.

You took a test in the library?? Why didn’t you go home first???

I snickered, and he sent another text before I could reply.

Just stay there, I’m leaving the rink now.

Poor guy sounded like he was about to freak out. I put him out of his misery and dialed his number.

He greeted me with, “I’m on my way. Don’t leave until I get there.”

I fought my smile. “There’s no need, Vaughan. I meant to tell you I was running late, not that I was late late.”

He fell silent, and then asked, “So we’re not talking about your period?”
