Away from Ronan.
She sucked in a ragged breath and got back to work.
*
It was well past midnight by the time Felicity walked out of the sheriff’s office. She stopped short.
Ronan’s truck sat beside her Bronco beneath the sharp glow of the security lights. The driver’s door opened, and he climbed out before she reached her vehicle.
“What do you want?” she asked.
“To see you.”
She folded her arms. “Why?”
“I gave you a few days after the other night.” He shrugged one shoulder. “That’s over. We need to talk.”
“We really don’t.”
“Didn’t take you for a coward, Felicity Graham.”
Her temper flared instantly. “You don’t know me.”
“No.” He held her gaze. “That’s exactly the problem. I want to.”
“Maybe I don’t want you to.”
“I don’t believe that.”
A humorless laugh escaped her. “Believe whatever you want.”
“There is something between us.”
“No.” The word cracked through the empty parking lot. “That’s where you’re wrong, Marine.” She jabbed a finger toward him. “There’s nothing between us. There never will be.”
“Liar.”
Heat rushed into her cheeks.
“You keep telling yourself that.” His voice stayed maddeningly calm as he took a slow step closer. “But stop trying to convince me.”
Her pulse stumbled. Damn him.
“I know what I felt,” he continued.
“Congratulations.”
“And it wasn’t just sex.”
Her stomach tightened. She refused to acknowledge it. “Look.” She blew out a tired breath. “Understand something. I don’t do relationships.”
His expression didn’t change.
“I like my life the way it is. If I want a man…” She lifted one shoulder. “I find one.”
His jaw flexed. “Yet lately … that hasn’t been working for you. And I’ve already told you…”
She frowned at his pause, heart pounding.
