"I’ll try."
"Try harder."
"I’ll behave."
I look up. "I have Hello Kitty pajamas."
His mouth lifts. "I’ve seen the matching slippers the night Rooks ruined your kitchen."
Oh… right. "I pick the snacks," I fire back.
"I trust your taste in all things snack related."
I point at him. "You still have to play properly. No hiding from everyone so you can win."
"Baylor, I’m not throwing a hockey game to watch Couple's Cove."
"I’m just making sure."
"I can do my job without taking a penalty."
"That would be something new for your highlight reel."
He laughs and holds out his hand. "Deal?"
I take it. "Deal."
His fingers close around mine, and I remember those same fingers at my waist yesterday. I should let go before I start thinking about the rest of it, but he releases my hand first.
"This is going to be the easiest bet I’ve ever won," I tell him, reaching for my bag. "I’m going downstairs to change,"
"Leave that. You’re coming back."
He’s right. I still have today’s baking to do, and carrying everything downstairs won’t get me out of the bet. I put the bag back on the stool.
"Don’t touch anything."
"I know. Twenty dollars."
"And don’t start making plans for Wednesday night. You’re going to lose."
He grins. "Bring your pajamas anyway."
I pull the door closed before he can see me smile, then open Ellie’s messages on my way to the elevator.
Me: Are you free Wednesday night?
Her answer comes before the doors open.
Ellie: For you, always. What are we doing?
I look down at the Blue Devils logo across my chest.
Me: We’re going to a Hawkeyes game. I broke a rule.
Me: And… apparently, I need to do laundry before I break anymore.
