I can’t get the arm out from beneath me.
Hands are pulling at jerseys. Hunter is shouting, an official is over us, and Beau’s weight finally comes off me.
I stay where I am. I know well enough that I’m injured. Too injured to move without help or it could be worse.
"Wolf?"
Theo drops beside me.
"Don’t move."
"I’m not fucking trying to."
Except I am. Instinct, stupidity, whatever the hell it is, I try to draw the arm closer.
The pain sears through my body, nearly makes me sick.
"Okay," Theo says, watching my face. "Leave it. We’ve got you."
The crowd has gone quieter. That’s worse than the shouting.
I stare at the ice while he asks questions. I can feel my fingers. I know where I am. My shoulder hurts so badly that answering anything else feels unreasonable.
Someone brings the stretcher.
"No," I start.
"Wolf," Theo says. "Let us do this."
I close my eyes.
The next time I open them, Kendall is beside me.
Her expression tells me enough.
"Try to relax your arm," Kendall says as Theo starts cutting off my jersey.
I laugh, once, because that’s a ridiculous fucking request.
"I know," she says. "Do what you can."
The treatment room door opens and closes around us. Someone takes my skates. Someone else asks about medication, and Kendall answers while checking my hand again.
"What happened to Beau?"
"Game misconduct," Theo says. "He’s off."
"Is he hurt?"
"They’re checking him."
I stare at the ceiling.
Kendall gets something started for the pain, but it doesn’t change the way she’s looking at my shoulder.
"You’re going to the hospital now. We need images and an orthopedic assessment."
"And then?"
