Maybe I’m the Problem

I waved him off and made room on the bed for Ms. Mae to sit down. This was about to turn into a lecture and I wasn’t in the mood right now. All I wanted was to be left alone for a few hours so I could wrap my mind around this whole situation.

“Summer you need to focus on carrying this baby. Whatever you mad at Law about, needs to be put on the back burner until she’s here.” She rubbed on my stomach. “I don’t want to hear shit else about y’all not getting along. Am I understood?”

“I hear you,” Law replied.

“When she gets here. Y’all can do what the hell y’all want to do then. Until then, shut up and get along.”

While they talked, I grabbed my phone to cancel all my remaining appointments until further notice. The only reason I took on clients was to keep my mind off of Law while he was gone. I realized that shit like that got Law’s attention. He sent a threatening text right before he showed his ass up to the house. He preached about me making money, so that’s what I did.

Ms. Mae left and Law left shortly after. That gave me time to take a shower and get nestled up in the bed. The alone time did me some good. My blood pressure was down since my last check and my headache was gone. As I laid here alone, I promised my daughter that I would let nothing else bother me that would put both of our health in danger. Pinkie was pushed to the back of my mind and Law was too. I wasn’t going to force happiness in my relationship. If Law wanted to be with me, then he’ll have to do more than say it. The door popped open and I rolled my eyes.

“I brought you something to eat because the food here is horrible and I don’t want you feeding that shit to my baby.”

“All my favorites…egg drop soup, fried chicken wings, lo mein, and a large Pepsi with a lot of ice.”

“Yea, and don’t forget I went to a lot of damn places to get that shit too.”

“Thank you, baby daddy.”

“Don’t call me that.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“I never wanted a baby with a woman that couldn’t be my wife. I’ll never call you my baby mama because you’re about to be my wife. Now I’m tired of going back and forth with you. You are the only woman that will birth my kids and the only woman that will wear my ring and last name. I’m done with bullshit from the past. My daughter is my number one concern right now.”

“I’m done with it. All I ask is that you respect me and never cheat on me again. If it happens again, I don’t know what I would do.”

“It won’t happen again. I promise.”

29. TREY

Getting back on my feet was the hardest thing to do. Pinkie reminded me the whole time I stayed with her that I needed to get off my ass. Being a man and staying with a woman that constantly made you feel like you would never be enough not only made me feel like shit but it made me get off my ass too. It took me a couple of months but I was now back on my feet. The job wasn’t much but it helped pay child support and rent.

I was a maintenance man at Memorial Health. The pay wasn’t half of what I was getting paid before I got locked up but after the court ordered me to pay child support, I had to get off my ass and make it happen. Pinkie paid my first two payments and wouldn’t shut up about it. I was working so much overtime so I could pay her back. She was a fucking pain and savior at the same time.

“Trey, we got a machine down in the OR. Do you think you can take a look at it?” Serenity, an OR nurse, asked.

“For you I will.” I smiled at her.

“Make sure you come by tonight. I’ll cook you a nice meal and something extra.”

“I’ll make sure I stop by.”

The good thing about working here, the women were endless. Lil’ Mama was a nurse in the operating room on the night shift. For her to still be here, they must’ve been busy. We kicked it a lot but we agreed to keep it on the low so our jobs wouldn’t be jeopardized. I’ve learned my lesson about women. You couldn’t get me to wife a bitch if you paid me.

As I walked behind her on the elevator, I bumped into a nigga that was making eye contact with Serenity. When he mugged me, I noticed he was Summer’s nigga.

“My bad, my nigga,” he looked at me and kept walking.

Fuck was he doing up here? Summer was pregnant but I knew it was too soon for her to be having the baby. She would always tell me how Law was cheating and she felt like he really wasn’t into her like she was into him. Summer could’ve been lying to me too because she wasn’t all innocent either.

I went to look at the equipment, which ended up being an easy fix. After I left from the OR, I headed to the birthing center to see if I could see if any new babies had been born. I had no business worrying about Summer since she left me without letting me explain me and Lana’s situation. After trying for months to get in contact with her, I finally realized that she blocked me or changed her number.

“My bad for bumping into you earlier,” Law walked up to the side of me as I stared at the babies crying in the nursery.

“It’s cool. I know how it is when you see a bad bitch.”

“Nah, it wasn’t nothing like that. I fucked her a few times but she wasn’t worth the time,” he replied. “You got kids?”
