It seems to be my lucky day in traffic. Cars are inconsistent in volume. I don’t have to swerve to avoid assholes or cut anybody off. It’s a perfect day for a S.A. Cosby audiobook and cruise. I get through chapter one of RazorBlade Tears before Dime’s place is in front of me. I park a little further since another car is in my usual spot. She already has company? My legs move like hell towards her front door, where I knock twice. It feels like it’s taking her longer than usual to answer. Normally she’s a ball of lightning getting to the door.
I knock twice more, much louder. This time, she cracks the door, just enough for me to see one eye and part of her skin.
“Oh… hey, girl,” she sounds nervous, “I wasn’t expecting you.”
“Girl, what the hell are you talking about? You texted me this morning saying we should link.” “Oh…yeah. That’s right,” she also sounds low on breath, “Maybe come back later?”
It sounds like she’s been coming all morning.
“Dime, if you don’t open this fuckin’ door after I’ve come all the way over here. Who’s in there?”
“You said who?” “Dime.”
“Okay, okay. Just give me a second.”
Dime closes the door, whispering to someone in the background to put on their pants. I’m on high alert. This isn’t the first time I’ve walked onto her getting fucked. But there’s just something about this time. This time feels…different. Suddenly the door swings open and Dime is wearing a sleek black robe. It only stops at her thighs. I’d think she stole mine if I hadn't seen it in the bathroom this morning.
“Okay, what’s up?”
“Um, you tell me.” My arms are folded across my chest.
“I, um, so you remember last night?”
“Yeah. What about last night?” “Well, see…”
Before she can finish her sentence, a muscular arm comes wrapping itself around her neck. She’s looking part nervous, part guilty. I look through the door and my eyes almost melt. Because never did this bitch bring home my Goddamn brother in-law. Rayne stands behind Dime completely shirtless, wearing boxers he probably borrowed from her closet. I can’t even speak for a minute. I’m not even shocked by the hookup. It’s more the irritation keeping me on mute. I specifically told this hamhock-headed heffa not to fuck this nigga. Yet, here we are.
“Um, Rayne?” Dime has to stutter to say. “What’s up, baby?”
“No, no. Not pet names. We’re just fucking. I’m not your baby. There is no baby. And also, didn’t I tell you to wait in the bedroom?”
“Oh, yeah. Well, I wanted to know if I could slide on some of that Oreo cereal you got on the shelf?”
I’m fighting laughter, arms still crossed like a schoolteacher. “Well, can he?” I say, sarcastically smiling.
“Sure, Rayne. But don’t drink up all my Almond Milk.”
“Bet,” Rayne looks past her straight in my direction, “What’s good, sis in-law!”
“You know I’m telling your brother, right?”
He waves me off. “Man, whatever, snitch. I’m hungry. Ain’t nobody worried about you.”
He storms away, apparently on his way to eat up Dime’s breakfast food. Meanwhile, she’s being devoured with a scowl of judgement. I’m so tempted to roundhouse kick her. My foot’s just itching to catch her across the jaw.
“Wow. He gets pussy and free breakfast? When’s the wedding?”
Dime rolls her eyes at me. “Morgan, please.”
“Please what? Didn’t I tell you last night Rayne was not to end up in this house?”
“Okay, I get it. But you are not my mother.”
“And you’re lucky I’m not too. Because I want so badly to take my belt off right now. What the hell are you thinking, girl?”
“I’m thinking he’s fine, his dick is big, and I have needs.” “Girl, Rose Wands are easy to come by.”
“I’m bored with that. Plus, I don’t know. I see the charm.”
