“Only Coach Teller. Oh, and Cash.”

There must be something in my voice when I say Cash’s name because she lifts her sunglasses and squints. “Is there something I should know?”

I chuckle. “Remember I told you about the really hot guy I spent the night with on my birthday?”

Her brows shoot up. “That was Cash? Oh shit.” She stifles a giggle.

“He did not seem happy to see me.”

She wrinkles her nose. “Oh. Well, fuck him then.”

“I was hoping for another round, but I guess not. Anyway, introduce me to the other ladies. I want to meet the one who’s opening the bookstore.”

“Jayne.” She grins. “Come on.” She tugs me by the arm, and for a while, I’m completely swept up in conversation with the wives and girlfriends. Jayne Morrison is engaged to Bodi Michener, and I find her delightful. We talk books and the grand opening of the store, which sounds amazing.

“I’ll be there,” I tell her.

“It’s going to be fun,” she says, eyes twinkling. “I’m stupidly excited about it.”

“I would be too.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Cash talking to Jamie. He keeps his back to me the entire time, which is equal parts interesting and annoying. Has he never had a one-night stand before? It doesn’t have to be weird.

Does it?

Whatever. If he’s embarrassed, that’s a him problem. I can’t control how he behaves, and I plan to have fun today.

“Want to get in the water?” Serena asks me.

“Sure.” I put my bag on one of the lounge chairs and jump into the water with Serena and Jayne right behind me. A couple of the kids join us, including Serena’s son Joey, so we all grab water guns and go to town.

“You’re going down!” Jamie’s son JJ yells, nailing me right in the face with a shot of water.

“Now you’re in trouble!” I yell back, retaliating. He feigns being injured and dramatically allows himself to sink below the water for a few seconds.

Then he pops back up, shooting water everywhere.

A couple of men I don’t know join in, and I smile at a tall kid with gray eyes and dark blond hair who can’t be more than nineteen or twenty.

“I’m Blaze,” he says, shaking my hand.

“I’m Maya. Reid’s sister.”

“Nice to meet you.”

We don’t have time for small talk because JJ and Simone pair up and they’re a lethal combination.

“These kids are hardcore,” Blaze stage whispers to me.

“Right?” I dive under the water, swim along the bottom until I reach Joey, and playfully squeeze his foot.

Even from under the water, I hear him yelp and then kick furiously to get away.

Grinning to myself, I resurface and run right smack into Cash.

“We have to stop meeting this way,” I murmur under my breath, shaking the water from my eyes.

He nods, but I can’t see his expression because his eyes are covered by sunglasses.
