One side of Coach Teller’s lips quirk up, like he’s amused.
Simon sighs.
Bodi nods.
West just gives me a grin.
“What?” I demand.
“Well, this is going to be easier than I thought,” Reid says after a beat. “I don’t have to do anything.”
“You don’t?” I’m confused again.
“Nope. You do.”
Chapter Thirty-Seven
Maya
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I love everything about it—cooking, baking, decorating, celebrating, all of it. Reid’s house usually looks like fall vomited all over it when we’re together.
But not this year.
I just don’t have the heart to get into the spirit of the holidays. I can’t even put my finger on exactly why. My heart is broken, yes. But it’s not the first time. Normally, I drown myself in ice cream and shopping sprees. The problem this time is that there is no amount of ice cream that will make up for the loss of Cash’s presence in my life. And I’m not rich enough to shop him out of my system.
I’ve been trying to figure out what it is, exactly, that’s bothering me, but I can’t come up with anything. It’s like all the passion in my life dissipated like it was a balloon that someone popped. I can’t muster up the energy for much of anything beyond my job at Dusty Peaks. I made the decision to sell my place in New York, but I’ve been too lazy to actually get the ball rolling.
Serena says this will pass, I’ll start feeling like myself again soon, and that I just have to ride it out. There’s no cure for a broken heart, and I have to accept that the only thing that’s going to help is time.
Ugh.
That sounds awful.
Everything about this is awful.
And I genuinely hate the sad, pathetic woman I’ve become.
I’m better than this. Or at least, I used to be.
For whatever reason, this breakup has me so out of sorts I don’t even recognize myself. And the worst part? I made a bunch of knee-jerk reaction decisions that may come back to bite me in the ass.
I need a vacation.
Maybe some valium.
A few bottles of wine?
Nah, I already tried that.
“Are you ready to go, Maya?” Reid knocks on my bedroom door.
I sigh. I have no intention of going anywhere. Especially since Jamie’s house is full of reminders of Cash. It’s where we reconnected.
Dammit.
I need to stop thinking about him.
“I’m not going,” I say quietly, opening the door for Reid.
