“She says that she does it all the time. She said that she wears so much makeup on stage that when she dresses normally, no one recognizes her. She’s confident that if we keep our mouths shut about it, no one will know.”
“That’s great!”
“She’ll be here on Thursday. I told her you’ll show her around.”
I’m actually jumping up and down. “Yes.”
“Just remember that you’re not allowed to tell people who she really is when she’s walking around town.”
“I got it.”
“Alright, she’ll come to your agency on Thursday morning and then she’s all yours. She said she’s looking forward to enjoying the incognito small-town life.”
“I can give her that! When are you coming?”
“Friday.”
“Let’s have dinner together.”
“Sure… So what’s new with you?”
I stop my pacing around the room. She knows!
“Luke told you?”
“Told me what?” she asks, all innocence.
“For someone who pretends to be estranged from her ex-husband, you sure talk to him a lot.”
“You’re my little sister. He had to tell me. What I don’t understand, is why you didn’t.”
“You’re not here. Besides, I don’t need to tell you about Blake’s bed. You already know all about it.”
“What? I never slept with Blake.”
“Not with Blake. But you were in his bed.”
There’s a long pause. “Who told you that?”
“Blake. He saw you.”
“Oh no. Is that why you kept asking about Luke the last time we talked?”
“Of course. Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I don’t want you to make more out of it than what it is.”
“And what is it?”
“Nothing. It’s just Luke and I have known each other a long time. So when we’re both single, and we both have the itch, we help each other out. It’s no big deal.”
“Okay.”
Except, I don’t think Luke has dated anyone since Madison. And I’m wondering if what’s not a big deal for her isn’t a huge deal for him.
“We’ll talk on Friday, okay?” she asks, eager to get rid of me no doubt.
“Sure.”
