Discerning Blake

by Lettie V. Jones

Ethan and I used to make out here all the time at the beginning of our relationship.

And I’ve caught both of the guys doing the same at least once over the last ten years. Blake more often than Bryce.

Blake looks up in the mirror. “And worse.”

Bryce shrugs and goes back to the storage room.

“Be careful Bryce doesn’t give them the key to your apartment,” I tease.

Blake laughs. It’s deep and throaty, and it makes me tingle all over.

“I threatened to take a picture of Luke’s ass and show it to him if he ever does that again. From now on, only I can bring girls to my apartment.”

I rotate my empty coffee cup. “And do you?”

“Sometimes.”

“Since Jane?”

Jane was a tourist he dated for a week over five months ago.

“No. She’s the last one.”

“So, Luke is the last person to have sex in your bed?”

He grunts. “Technically, yes.”

I don’t ask what technically means.

I bite down on my lip to stop from laughing. “You’re having a bit of a dry spell?”

“So, what did Ethan say?” he asks, obviously changing the subject.

There’s no faster way to suck the joy out of me than mentioning Ethan’s name.

“Maybe it’s best we don’t talk about it. I don’t want you to feel like I’m putting you in the middle.”

Blake picks up a sugar packet and rhythmically taps it on the table. “I don’t mind being in the middle if it makes things easier for you.”

My chest warms.

He says, “I told Ethan on the phone to just give you the agency.”

The warmth spreads to my belly.

“You did?”

“It’s the right thing to do. Once your lives are completely separated, you’ll be able to move on.”

My eyes go back to the mirror and the couple making out. They haven’t even touched their drinks.

“Claudia had an interesting theory about moving on. She said that to really get over Ethan, I should have sex with someone else. Just one night of great sex. To get him out of my system. To… bang him out, I guess.”

Blake doesn’t laugh at my lame joke. He pierces me with his shiny gaze. “If that’s what you want, I can help.”

My belly flips over.

“You mean… you and I… Funny.”
