Groaning, I slapped my forehead. “Oh my God, I’m such a shitty sister.”
“Relax. You have a lot going on. And I don’t expect y’all to show up at every event anyway.”
“How’d you do?”
“Whooped these nigga’s asses as usual. Things got a little heated, but it’s calmed down now.”
“Why do you always have to fight everywhere you go?”
“It wasn’t even me. Your daddy’s old ass was out here popping shit to some young niggas. I had to pull him aside and remind him that he ain’t as spry as he used to be.”
I fell into a fit of giggles, attempting to imagine my father getting in someone’s face. It wasn’t hard. Money and family were the two things he didn’t play about. Mishandle either one and he’d be ready to put his foot in your ass.
Lincoln and I both managed to inherit our fiery spirit from him.
“See, Daddy out there about to go to jail messing with you.”
“I had to remind his ass of that when he was about to get carted off by security. But you never answered my question. Is everything okay with you? Normally you don’t call back-to-back like that.”
“I had a car issue, but I’m fine. A friend came and helped me out. I’m home now.”
“What kind of issue?”
“Flat tire. I must have run over something after leaving the lawyer’s office.”
“Where’s your car now?”
“My insurance company is towing it to the nearest repair place. They’re going to call me once it’s dropped off and give me all the details.”
“Bet. Let me know what they say, and we can get it handled tomorrow.”
My eyes darted to Jamie, seemingly engrossed in his food and the show.
“Actually? That’s okay. I have it covered.”
“You sure?”
“Positive. If I need you, I’ll call you.”
“A’ight,” Lincoln begrudgingly agreed. “I’ll be on standby. And please call Dad back by the end of the night. You know no matter how many times I tell him you’re good, he won’t be satisfied until he talks to you himself.”
“I know. I will later.”
“Bet. I love you, sis.”
“I love you too, brother of mine. And congratulations on kicking major ass today.” Releasing a sigh as we ended the call, I went back to my conversation. “Okay, where was I?
“You were done talking,” Jamie answered through a mouthful of chicken. “I was about to follow up and ask why it’s so shocking when I show up for you or display the smallest amount of decency.”
Nibbling on one of my wings, I shrugged. “I don’t know. I guess after everything I’ve been through, I've gotten used to only counting on my family and Raelynn. Believing that other people have good intentions is hard for me.”
“Because of your ex?”
The conversation was moving into dangerous territory. It was a space that I’d have rather avoided, but it wouldn’t have been fair to him. Especially after he’d been so vulnerable with me.
“Yessss,” I dragged out my words. “But it’s a bit more complicated than that.”
“How so? If you feel comfortable elaborating, of course.”
