DAY THREE

“Oh, look who decided to be a big girl and use her phone,” Lorren drawled, having finally answered Sevyn’s call.

“Lor, not now. Hold on.”

Pulling her phone from her ear, Sevyn added Avery’s number and waited for her to pick up.

“Hello?”

“Hold on, Ave.”

Merging the calls, Sevyn checked to ensure that Lorren and Avery were both connected before jumping into her problem.

“Y’all help. My plan is failing miserably.”

“Plan, what plan?”

“Oh, just the little revenge plot little miss genius created to try to get back and Dallas. That plan.”

“Sev, you did what?”

“Don’t judge me okay? I was emotional and it seemed like a good idea at the time but guys,” Sevyn whined, laying back on her bed. “This is not what I had in mind. I thought Dallas was going to be selfish, pushy, and only thinking about himself. I certainly expected the time we spent together to be horrible. But these past couple of days it’s been anything but.”

“Elaborate, please,” Avery instructed.

Sevyn stared up at the ceiling for a moment before responding. “I don’t even know if I can explain it. Dal has been so thoughtful and sweet, and everything this week has centered around something I love. It’s a no-brainer that I’m adamant about being family-oriented and the first day we spent half with his family and then he surprised me with Kohl being back. The next day, we watched a good amount of Christmas movies and he cooked for me before taking me to the parade that night, and then to see the nutcracker.”

“Oh yeahhh,” Lorren sang. “You do go to that boring ass show every year.”

“Shut up, Lor,” Sevyn smiled. “I have no idea what we’re doing today, but he didn’t pop up as early as he usually did. After sitting here for a couple of hours I realized that I was disappointed that he didn’t. I’m supposed to still borderline hate his guts,” she whined. “What’s happening to me?”

“You’re not being a stubborn bitch and allowing that man to show you how he feels instead of fighting him tooth and nail. That’s all.”

“Damn, I didn’t even have to be the one to shoot from the hip this time. Thanks, Ave.”

“You’re welcome, girl.”

“I think I like the two of you better when you’re nitpicking each other,” Sevyn drawled. “Focus, please. I only have a few more days before we have to have the big talk and finally decide what we’re going to do and I’m not so sure what I’m going to say. Crushing his feelings seemed like such a good idea a couple of days ago.”

“And I hope you feel guilty as hell about it, petty ass,” Lorren tittered. “What’s happening is what’s supposed to happen. Things feel good because you’re going with the flow instead of trying to control everything. You aren’t going to magically trust him overnight, or even in a week. The point of all this is for you to realize the effort, and at least give him a foot in the door.”

“If that’s what you want to do,” Avery added. “Is it?”

“I wish I knew, Ave,” Sevyn sighed. “The only thing I’m sure of is that I like the way things are when I’m with him. I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that.”

“Roll with it until you can’t anymore,” Lorren suggested. “But stop playing games. God don’t like ugly and He damn sure don’t bless no mess.”

“Are you supposed to be cursing while talking about the good Lord?”

“I’m His child, made in His image and therefore He knows my heart. And since you’re talking, Ave. I heard that you were out with a little brown-skinned cutie the other night that you’ve yet to tell us about.”

“What I do on my time ain’t got nothing to do with y’all heffas.”

“Oh, uh uh,” Sevyn sat up. “As much as you’ve been in my business lately, spill it, hoe.”

“There’s nothing to spill. It was one date. And who told you that they saw me anyway, Lorren?”
