“Nothing, baby,” I tell her quietly, and her face softens.
“So this is really happening?” her dad asks, looking at us before transferring his gaze to his wife. “You must be proud of yourself.”
“A little.” Elsie shrugs with a smug smile.
“What’s going on?” Gunner asks, looking at his dad.
“Mom thinks she got Wyatt and me together, and that Anna and Kolter are together because of her,” Genevieve answers, while Elsie says, “Nothing.”
“What?” Gunner laughs like Genevieve’s joking, then focuses on his mom and frowns. “Wait, seriously?”
“What can I say? I’m good at what I do.”
“Well, where is my girl, then?” he asks, like he’s been left out of getting picked for a game of dodgeball.
“Oh please, honey, you are not even a little ready to settle down.” She waves him off.
“I could be.”
“Right, how many girls have you gone out with in the last week?” She raises a brow.
“What does that matter? Kolter dated before Anna.”
“Yes, but I knew that he wouldn’t be so busy looking for his next hookup that he’d be blind to the person standing in front of him.”
“That’s some bullshit,” he grumbles.
“Can we get back to the fact that you think Anna and I are together because of you?” Kolter says, looking at his mom, and she stares at him, tipping her head to the side. “Shit,” he mutters, looking at Anna. “You got us together.”
“I sure did.”
“My own mother fucking played me.”
“Are you upset that we’re together?” Anna narrows her eyes, and his mouth opens and closes before he shakes his head.
“Of course not.”
“Good.” She glares at him before turning to her plate.
“Well, I’m still pissed Mom doesn’t think I’m worthy of finding someone.”
“All right,” Elsie mumbles. “Then I have the perfect person for you.”
“Really? Who?”
“You can’t know who it is.”
“Why the hell not?”
“You just can’t. That’s not how it works.”
“Not even a hint?”
“Nope.” She picks up her wine and takes a sip, her brows dragging together as she pulls the glass from her lips. Looking into it, she reaches into the glass and comes out with a small clear pacifier. “What in the world?” She holds it up and inspects it.
“What is that?” Genevieve’s dad asks.
“It looks like a pacifier.”
