“Mia, I never strung you along, and you and I have been over for months. Not once since then have I given you a reason to think that we were going to get back together.”

“You’re right, you didn’t, but you also didn’t seem to care that I was here until now.”

“That’s bullshit, and you know it. The last time I came home to find you in my house, I told you it was uncool that you just let yourself in without giving me a heads-up.”

“Yeah, but you still ate the food I cooked for you, and I never heard you complain when I took Storm out so that he wasn’t cooped up inside all day.”

“He has a dog door and can come and go whenever he wants.”

“You know what? I’m done.” She walks across the kitchen to where her bag is sitting on the counter. “I don’t know what I was thinking, or why I didn’t listen to my friends when they all told me I was wasting my time with you.”

“You should have listened,” I agree, and she glares before unhooking my key from her key ring and throwing it in my direction. I don’t even bother trying to catch it. Instead, I let it hit me in my chest before it falls to the floor at my feet.

“You’re going to regret letting me walk away, Wyatt.”

I don’t tell her that that’s doubtful. Instead, I wait as she gathers her things and listen as she stomps through the house. When I hear the front door slam closed, I take a pull of my beer, then walk to the front door and turn the lock.

Looking down at Storm when I feel his weight rest against my leg, I shake my head. “Sorry, bud, but that’ll probably be the last time you see Mia.” Groaning, he falls to his bottom and lets out a sigh. He’ll get over it. I walk to my bag when my cell starts to ring and dig it out. Seeing who’s calling, I put my cell to my ear.

“Elsie.”

“Hey, did you see the signs around town?” she asks, sounding far too fucking happy.

“They’re hard to miss.”

“Right?” She laughs. “They really grab people’s attention.”

“Elsie.”

“You will not believe how many people I’ve had message to tell me how much they love them.” She cuts me off. “And everyone is talking about you, which is great.” She laughs again, and I grind my teeth together. If she was anyone else, I’d be losing my shit on them, but I know Elsie. I know that she didn’t make the signs to be malicious and that she really does think they are great. She probably doesn’t even realize how fucking ridiculous they are, which means that even if I fucking hate them, there is no way I can bring myself to ask her to take them down.

“Great.” I grab the bridge of my nose and squeeze my eyes closed.

“Oh,” she says, a little loud. “You’re off tomorrow, right?”

“Yeah.”

“That’s great. I just got an email from Shauna, and your campaign signs will be ready in the morning. Do you think you can go with Genevieve and pick them up?”

“I can grab them.”

“No, Shauna is a little funny about men she doesn’t know coming to her house. I’ll let Genevieve know that you’re going to go with her. Actually, it would probably be smart to take your truck anyways, since I doubt all the signs will fit in her car.”

“How many signs is it?”

“I ordered two hundred. We can order a few more if we need them.”

“I doubt we’ll need more than that.”

“You’d be surprised. I’m sure I’ll have people ask where they can get a sign to put in their yard when they start to see them around town.”

“How much cash do I need to take with me when I pick them up?”

“Nothing. They’re already paid for.”

“Elsie.”

“Don’t worry, I didn’t pay for them. I’ve had a steady stream of donations coming in since I started making calls and sending out emails. You have more than enough money for the signs and the ads I have planned.”
