“How’s that?” I frown.
“Your mom talks about you.”
Oh lord. “And what did she tell you about me?”
“That you’re very single.” My heart stops, literally stops, before it drops into my stomach.
“She didn’t.”
“She did.”
Oh.
My.
God.
“I’m going to kill her,” I whisper under my breath.
“You might not want to say that to an officer of the law.”
“Do you have a recording device on you right now?”
“Nope.”
“Then I never said anything, and you can’t prove I did.”
“Right.” His lips tip up. “Have a good day, Miss Fenwick.” He knocks twice on the roof of my car before taking a step back.
“You too,” I grumble, putting my engine in drive. As I pull onto the highway, I glance into my rearview mirror and see him watching me with a smile on his face.
Yeah, I’m totally going to kill my mother.
Chapter 4:
Barf
Genevieve
Juggling my purse, two iced coffees, and a bag filled with Anna’s and my favorite breakfast sandwiches from Cali’s Diner, I knock on her apartment door with the heel of my boot. The last few days I have been so busy with work that we haven’t had any real time to catch up, so this morning I got up early with a plan to surprise her with coffee and breakfast before she has to be at work. Hearing the door unlocking, I smile and hold up the coffees and paper bag in my hands.
“Surpri—” I cut myself off when the door opens and Kolter’s eyes lock with mine.
“Kolter?”
“Shit,” he whispers, and I frown.
“Babe, who is it?” Anna steps up next to him with her hair in curlers, wearing a shirt that is ten sizes too big and likely the shirt that Kolter isn’t wearing, since he’s only dressed in a pair of boxers. “Evvie.” Her eyes widen while my gaze pings between her and my brother and the pieces start falling into place. “I . . .”
“Are you banging him?” I cut her off and swing my head to my brother. “Are you banging her?”
“Fuck.” Kolter scrubs his fingers through his hair while Anna cringes.
“Oh my god.” I look between my best friend in the whole world and my brother. “Seriously?”
“I can explain,” Anna tells me, stepping in front of Kolter.
“Explain?” I take a step back from the two of them. “Really?”
