Delivered.

The word sat at the bottom of the screen.

Delivered.

I opened Cash's contact.

He answered on the second ring.

"Josie?"

No greeting. No sleep in his voice. Just my name, sharp enough to tear.

"I'm safe."

"Where the hell are you?"

The Cash I knew filled silence because silence made him nervous. This Cash made each word alone and hard.

"Bozeman."

Nothing.

Then a breath that sounded injured.

"With him?"

"Yes."

"Jesus Christ, Josie."

"I'm leaving."

"You stay exactly where you are. Give me the address."

"No."

"Josie, this is not a goddamn negotiation. Give me the address."

"Cash—"

"Boo is standing in a cell losing his mind because you drove off to trade yourself for him, Wyatt's got half the county checking roads, and Biscuit has tried to bite the Bronco twice. Give me the address."

The landing swayed under me.

"Boone's still in custody?"

A pause.

The anger in Cash broke open enough for grief to show.

"Yeah."

"But Derek said he withdrew it."

My hand closed around the phone.

"He put it in writing," I said. "Cash, he texted me. Behave and your boyfriend stays free. Those exact words. He promised withdrawal if I came here. I sent everything to Wyatt and the sheriff."
