Dad's mortgage.

My porch.

Josie waking in an empty bed.

Every Calloway man who had called carrying love because he didn't know how to ask another person to put a hand beneath the load.

I turned slightly.

Josie stood beside Wyatt's booth with her chin up. She wore her barn coat, still too large. Her braid lay over one shoulder. Biscuit's fur clung to her jeans.

Home.

"One more thing."

Nobody looked away.

"The man who stood in this room and called Josie Marsh unwell was lying."

Her eyes met mine.

"I know that for certain. Anybody wanting details can wait for court like everybody else."

That was all.

Her history wasn't evidence I needed to win a room. Her pain did not belong to Silver Bend because Silver Bend had finally decided to listen.

I put my hat back on.

Silence held.

Then a chair scraped at the corner four-top.

Earl Hansen stood.

He crossed the diner floor slowly, boots heavy on the old tile. Stopped in front of me. Looked up farther than most men liked to.

For a second, his hands stayed at his sides.

Then he put one out.

I looked at it.

Five years of fear didn't vanish because a man made one speech. A town didn't turn kind in a clean sweep. Stories wore grooves. People settled inside them. Climbing out took work.

But work was something I understood.

I took his hand.

Earl's grip was firm.

"All right, Boone," he said.

Not Big Boone.

Just Boone.

He stepped away.
