“Stop it!” Cade stalked toward me. “Ember!”
“No!” I said, tears welling in my eyes. “Don’t touch me.”
His wolf was out, and his control was gone.
“Cade, don’t!”
But instead of touching me like I’d thought he would, he scooped me into his arms and headed straight for the bathroom. I pulled my legs together, the pressure so hard, so high …
What was going on?!
“You need to get into the bath,” he said, turning on the cold water and dumping me in it.
He didn’t even give it time to fill all the way up before he locked the door and slammed it closed, with him in the hallway, as if he didn’t trust himself. I sank into the cold water pooling around me, sweating more than I ever had.
“Cade!” I shouted through the tears. “Cade! Come back!”
But he was gone.
Chapter Thirty-Two
Cade
After slamming the bathroom door shut, I hurried down the stairs and away from Ember’s scent. It was intoxicating, captivating, and coming in heavy waves that taunted my wolf.
Why was she in heat? She was human—I was sure of it.
By the way her body was reacting …
Someone had to have bitten her. A normal human didn’t go into heat unless they had been bitten by a wolf and needed to complete the mate bond, or …
My eyes widened, and I balled my hands into tight fists.
Or she was Davix’s mate.
A ferocious growl left my mouth, and I found myself ascending the stairs again.
The two foxes stood by the door, staring at me through wide eyes.
What are they—
“Cade!” Ember cried from the bathroom, the sound of her voice muffled by the door. I could hear the water sloshing around in the bathtub, the pain in her words. “Cade, please! I need you to stop this! I … I can’t handle it.”
My wolf stopped right at the bathroom door, my canines dripping with saliva.
“She-wolf needs mate,” my wolf ordered me. “Mate now.”
I balled my hands into fists so tightly that my palms started bleeding and turned away from the door, heading straight for my bedroom. I couldn’t stand around and think because if I thought anymore, then I was going to march into that bathroom and mark her.
While I loathed that I’d had to throw and lock her into the bathroom, I couldn’t fucking control myself. One more smell of her sweet scent, and my wolf would lose complete control, and she’d hate me forever.
She already did because that asshole had told her he was paying me. Pavel paying me was the only way that I could get closer to her without him getting suspicious about my interest in her. Besides, I put all that money toward the Silver Moon Medical Center for better medical care for her.
When I reached my bedroom, I snatched the painting Ember and I had done together.
If Ember really was Davix’s mate, then he wouldn’t be able to stay away from her for much longer. From the mere way he had reacted to her, I swore he’d be just like his fucking father. He didn’t have the self-control.
Hell, I barely did, and my mate was dead.
