A low snarl left my throat because I knew everyone in the hallway had heard Cade call my name. And if I knew Hazel well enough by now, then she’d want to see why Cade’s voice was calling my name in the middle of the hospital.
The last freaking thing I needed right now was pity. I loathed it.
“Well, I’d like to get home at a decent time tonight, and I don’t want to be caught up in the hospital all dang day!” I whisper-yelled at him. “I don’t need anyone knowing I’m here! I have important stuff to do.”
“Like what?”
I crossed my arms. “Because you asked so nicely, I have a commission to finish.”
Cade raised his brows. “Oh, yeah?”
“Yep.”
“What’re you painting?”
My nose scrunched. “A self-portrait and a wolf.”
“You don’t want to paint that?” he asked.
“The self-portrait?” I asked, feeling all weird about it because, “Why would someone want a painting of me?”
“Because you’re pretty.”
Cheeks blazing hot, I let my hair fall into my face and turned away. I wouldn’t say I was the prettiest girl alive, and I especially didn’t feel beautiful in this hospital bed, but hearing him compliment me made me feel things all over.
“Stop it,” I said, fiddling with my sleeve.
“I thought I’d heard you,” Hazel said, poking her head into the room.
Davix appeared behind her, his jaw indefinitely clenched and his eyes hard.
She furrowed her brows and stepped into the room. “What’re you doing here?”
“Oh, uh, just for a checkup …”
Davix growled. “At a werewolf hospital?”
My eyes widened, and I glanced at Cade. “This is a center for wolves?”
Cade cut his glare to Davix, who followed his sister into the room, his canines lengthened enough to peek behind his lips. They glared at each other, sizing each other up, like they had yesterday.
“What the fuck are you doing here?” Davix asked Cade.
“None of your fucking business,” Cade growled back.
Hazel rolled her eyes at them and walked to my side, taking a seat at the edge of my bed. She peered over at the clipboard that Janice had left on the stand beside my bed, her brows furrowing.
“Are you sick?” she asked.
Davix snapped his head over, forgetting his spat with Cade. “You’re sick?”
“No!” I exclaimed, narrowing my eyes at him. “This is how rumors start.”
That asshole stomped over and snatched the clipboard from Hazel, who grabbed it back and glared at her brother.
“You don’t even know how to read that. She’s not sick. I was just asking why she’s here.”
“Why is she here?” he asked his sister and not me.
