I expect partial credit.
Tuesday night hadn’t made anything weird between us.
She’d told me something she hadn’t told me before.
I listened.
Then Wednesday came.
Then Thursday.
Now it was Friday, and Luna Bennett was calling my phone for the first time.
I answered before she could change her mind.
“Hello?”
“You sound confused.”
I smiled and leaned back in my chair.
“I am.”
“Why?”
“You called me.”
“I know how phones work, Ellis.”
“I didn’t say you didn’t.”
“You implied it.”
“I’m just surprised.”
“Do you want me to hang up?”
“No.”
The answer came quickly enough that she laughed.
“Okay, then.”
I heard voices somewhere behind her.
“You at the store?”
“Where else would I be?”
“You do have a house.”
“I’ve heard.”
I laughed. “So why are you calling me?”
“Maybe I wanted to hear your voice.”
I went quiet.
