I laughed. “Why you say it like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like I just told you I’m getting married.”

“I didn’t say all that.”

“You sounded like it.”

“I’m just saying. A date is different.”

“Different from what?”

“All that stopping by the bookstore and pretending you just happened to be in the neighborhood.”

I laughed. “I wasn’t pretending anything.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“What?”

She went quiet for a second. “Something happened.”

“Nothing happened.”

“Ellis.”

“What?”

“I know you.”

I probably should’ve left it alone, but the smile pulling at my mouth wasn’t helping my case.

My mind went back to Luna standing beside her car last night, her fingers curled into the front of my shirt and that little laugh she let out when we pulled apart. I could still see the way her eyes dropped to my mouth before she kissed me again.

I took another drink.

“Nothing you need to know about,” I corrected.

“Oh, something definitely happened.”

“I gotta go.”

“You ain’t gotta go nowhere. It’s eight-twenty in the morning.”

“I have somewhere to be.”

“With Luna.”

“Goodbye, Tasha.”

“Tell my sister-in-law I said—”

I hung up.

I stood there staring at my phone for a second before laughing and shaking my head. This woman.

Another notification appeared before I could put the phone down.
