I ate enough to count.
That doesn’t sound like dinner.
It was leftover Chinese.
How much?
I narrowed my eyes at the screen.
Why are you interrogating me?
Because I’m about to go get food.
I waited.
Nothing else came through.
I didn’t know what I was expecting him to say, but apparently it was something because I was still staring at the conversation when another message appeared.
Come with me.
My thumb stilled over the screen, and I read it again.
Come with me.
There was no explanation attached and no real reason I should. I’d already eaten, technically or otherwise. I was showered, my hair was wrapped, and I was wearing shorts that had seen better days. Leaving my house again wasn’t included anywhere in that night’s plans.
I should tell him no.
Instead, I typed—
Where?
His answer came so quickly that I wondered if he already knew I’d ask.
Forty minutes later, I was sitting across from Ellis in a booth wondering when exactly I’d lost control of my evening.
“You know,” I said, reaching for one of his fries, “I was comfortable at home.”
Ellis moved the basket out of my reach.
“You could’ve stayed there.”
I stared at him.
He stared back.
“Give me a fry.”
“You said you ate.”
“I did.”
“Then you don’t need mine.”
“I didn’t say I needed one.”
His mouth twitched.
