“Wow.”
“What exactly were you expecting?”
“I don’t know. Something with personality.”
“My breakfast needs a personality?”
“Everything needs a little personality.”
“I’m eating it, not dating it.”
She laughed into her glass, and there it was again.
That feeling I’d had earlier while photographing her.
I liked making her laugh.
More than I should’ve been paying attention to.
I dropped my eyes to the menu even though I’d already decided what I wanted.
“So you cook?” Luna asked.
“What makes you think I cook?”
“You made Mila pancakes Saturday.”
That got my attention. “She told you that?”
“She told me a lot of things.”
“That sounds dangerous.”
“It was mostly dinosaurs and the fact that you don’t let her have a turtle.”
“She does not need a turtle.”
“She strongly disagrees.”
“She also thinks she’d remember to feed it every day.”
Luna took a sip of tea. “Somebody has to advocate for her.”
“She has grandparents for that.”
“And now she has me.”
Something in my chest tightened at that.
“She’d appreciate that,” I said.
“See?”
“I’m still not buying the turtle.”
“I didn’t say you should.”
“You’re thinking it.”
