Crow nodded. “Angel.” Ghost watched her carefully. She was holding herself together, but just barely. “Your father loved the club,” Crow continued. “Maybe too much. Elena loved him, but she didn't trust everyone around him.”
“She didn’t trust Razor,” Angel guessed.
“Him, and others,” Crow said. Razor smiled, but Crow ignored him. “She started keeping copies of everything—transactions, payoffs, names, and dates. Every dirty thing that passed through Nomad Knights' hands.”
“Why?” Angel asked.
“In case she ever needed leverage against any of them,” Crow said.
“Against the club?” Angel asked.
“Against anyone who threatened your family,” Crow corrected. Angel looked down, and Ghost could almost see her trying to reconcile the mother she remembered with the woman Crow was describing.
“How did she die?” Angel asked. Crow went silent, and Angel looked at him. “How did my mother die?”
“Angel,” Hammer said quietly.
“No.” She turned on him. “Don't.”
Hammer held up his hands. “I wasn't going to stop you.”
Her anger disappeared as quickly as it came. “Sorry.”
“You don't ever have to apologize to me for wanting the truth,” Hammer said. Ghost looked at his best friend. Hammer had always been better at that shit than he was. He always seemed to know what to say. Ghost usually wanted to solve the problem, shoot the problem, and bury the problem. Feelings were considerably more complicated.
Angel faced Crow again. “How did they die?”
Crow's eyes closed. “She was shot.”
Angel flinched. “Who killed her?”
“I don't know,” he insisted.
“Bullshit,” she spat.
“I was the one who found her,” Crow admitted.
“Where?” Angel asked.
“Behind the clubhouse,” Crow said.
Angel stared at him. “Where the grave is?” she asked.
“Yes,” he whispered.
“Was she already dead?” Angel asked.
“Yes,” Crow said.
“Did my father know that she had been killed?” she asked. Crow hesitated, and Angel's voice dropped. “Did my father know?”
“He found us,” Crow said.
Ghost watched the blood drain from her face. “So Dad knew she was dead.”
“Yes,” he breathed.
“And he told me she left,” Angel said.
