“Why not?” Hammer said.
“That's what you should probably ask them,” Mouse said.
Ghost stared at the phone in his hand. Something didn’t feel right. “What happened to Angel after Shadow died?”
“She vanished the next day,” Mouse said.
“Vanished how?” Hammer asked.
“As in nobody could find her,” Mouse explained.
Ghost's blood ran cold. “Was someone looking for her?”
“According to what I'm seeing? Everybody was looking for her,” Mouse said.
Hammer paced away from the desk. “Why?”
Mouse sighed. “That's the part I haven't figured out yet.”
“Figure it out,” Ghost ordered.
“I'm working on it,” Mouse said.
“How long will it take?” Hammer asked.
“Couple days—a week tops,” Mouse said.
“You've got until tonight,” Ghost insisted.
Mouse laughed. “Go fuck yourself.”
“I’ll double your fee,” Ghost offered.
Mouse was quiet for a minute. “I’ll have answers for you by tonight.” The line went dead, and Ghost stared at the phone.
Hammer stopped pacing. “She's not leaving town because of us.”
“No, she’s not,” Ghost agreed.
“She was already planning to run before she ended up in our bed last night,” Hammer assessed.
“Looks that way,” Ghost grumbled. Monster had remained silent through most of the conversation, but now he pushed away from the wall and stood in front of them both. “Are the Nomad Knights still active?” Ghost asked him.
“Last I heard,” Monster said.
“How about the Reapers?” Hammer asked.
Monster nodded. “Unfortunately.” Monster rubbed his jaw. “And you two still want this woman?” Ghost looked at him. It was probably supposed to be a serious question; instead, he laughed, and Monster frowned. “Asshole,” Monster mumbled under his breath.
“You think any of that changes shit?” Ghost asked.
“It should,” Monster insisted.
“It doesn't,” Ghost growled.
Hammer nodded. “Not even a little.” Monster stared at both of them like they had lost their damn minds. Maybe they had.
Ghost stood. “Where are you going?” Hammer asked.
