“I’m fine, Jonah. His men protected me. One of them even took a bullet for me.”
“Promise me you’re okay,” his voice tight with concern.
“I promise, Jonah. I’m fine. Just a little tired.” I firmly confirm
“Do you want to stay, or should I come get you?” He asks,
I almost say no too fast, but I slow myself down.
“I’ll stay. They’re keeping a close eye on everything. Running won’t fix this.”
“I know. But I’d rather you run than stay and risk whoever this is getting to you,” he says.
“I don’t think Bruce and his team will let that happen. They’re very good at what they do.”
“Okay. For now, stay with Bruce, but be careful. Call me immediately if you need to leave.”
“I will. I promise.”
“I’ll call you tomorrow, Sprinkles, to check on you.”
“Okay. Talk tomorrow.”
“Bye, Sprinkles.”
We hang up, and Bruce walks straight in. He was likely waiting nearby. I raise a questioning brow at him.
“Were you listening?”
“Of course I was. I need to know if I had to hide you before his army arrives,” he teases.
I laugh.
“You don’t mean that,” I say lightly.
He shrugs with his arms crossed, and I can tell he absolutely does. I shake my head and walk past him toward the living room. He follows and takes my arm.
When we get there, Ice, Smith, Chef Wayne, Grayson, and Malik are all in the living room and kitchen area.
“Hi, guys.”
“Hi, Lexi,” they echo in different tones.
“Let’s eat,” Bruce says.
We all grab plates, sit together, and eat. The room fills with laughter and casual jokes. I turn to Bruce and mouth, “Thank you.”
He winks.
Grayson soon plays one of our songs and we end up in a sing-along. Bruce insists I’m not allowed to dance. I sit curled up beside him instead, watching everyone joke around.
At some point, I fall asleep.
When I wake up, it’s just Ice and Bruce watching a movie.
“How long was I out?” I croak.
“Three hours,” Bruce says, still tracking my sleep.
